Nigeria’s First lady Aisha Buhari, in a brave international interview with BBC, aired views that distinctly contrasted those of her husband’s administration.
In the Interview, Aisha Buhari warned the President that in a case where he (Buhari) bids to run for office again in 2019, she will not campaign for him.
Coming off as a shock, Nigerians have wondered what could have made the first lady use clear words that oppose those of her spouse in an international medium.
It is common ground that Muslim women should model total submission to their husbands. Well Nigeria’s first lady sees reason to sound other wise.
Earlier reports said that Mr President had tried to halt the interview but BBC made it clear that not pushing through with the interview was completely dependent of Aisha Buhari. Finally going on with the interview speaks volumes about the first lady’s stand at this point.
Aisha Buhari, during the interview, suggested that the office of the president has been hijacked by “few people” who are now in charge of presidential appointments. It is not clear if the first lady was admitting to Nigerians that Buhari was a ceremonial head and perhaps a face to faceless leaders.
However some reports have equally alleged that a cabal led by Mamman Daura, a close confidant of the President, has practically taken over Aso Rock. It is also believed that Daura rebuffs the first lady’s orders, thus both do not get along.
Unconfirmed reports have also insinuated that the President may be travelling more to attend to his health and not just for official purposes. Recounting the series of memory loss cases on both national and international levels, it says that the President is largely suspected to be suffering the Alzheimer disease.
Perhaps why this “few people” as mentioned were entrusted with the present dicey welfare of the country.
Contradicting Buhari’s assertion that his Ministers are not criminals, Aisha partly opposes the view with these remarks:
“The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years.”
“People who do not have voters card are those who are given appointments and enjoying the government.”
“Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.”
She blames this nepotistic tendencies on these “few people” whom she refuses to mention their names.
“You will know them if you watch television.”
Stating her discontent with the incumbent administration could not be any clearer with her interview.
“He is yet to tell me but I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again.”
Aisha Buhari says Nigerians should decide for themselves if Buhari is really in charge of Nigeria. However he commends him for his efforts in improving the security of the people in northeast Nigeria especially.
“No-one is complaining about being attacked in their own homes. Thankfully everyone can walk around freely, go to places of worship, etc. Even kids in Maiduguri have returned to schools.”
This is quite a brave one from the first lady, who also happens to be muslim. Watch this space. More news on development concerning this will surely surface.
Or we hope it does.
