Nigerian-British boxer, Anthony Joshua Oluwafemi Olaseni just unseated the reigning heavyweight boxing champion, Charles Martin to clinch the title.
Martin who had an unbeaten streak in 24 matches was making the first defence of the title he won in January. He entered the ring in a crown, velvet robe and the smile of someone confident on retaining his IBF title, only to have Anthony Joshua put an end to it.
Critics had said that Anthony Joshua was being pushed into the International Boxing Federation (IBF) too early in his boxing career, presumably having inadequate experience and/or ability. However, after the reigning champ sent Charles Martin to the canvas twice in the second round, the skepticism and Charles Martin’s chances at retaining the tile were laid to rest.
The bout which took place at the 02 Arena in London saw Anthony Joshua with an upper hand from the first round. The second round saw him get a hold of Martin with a counter right hand, sending him crashing to the canvas, another big counter right gave Joshua a Knock Out win.
This win has out rightly secured Anthony Joshua’s professional credentials. Already the media is abuzz with Joshua’s win with many spectators tagging him as spectacular. Joshua however said, concerning the hype that,
“There ‘ll probably be some negativity about how easy it is. But two days ago Charles Martin was a big, dangerous southpaw and he had the confidence to come over here and fight in the lion’s den.”
“All the hype is good for boxing, let’s keep on pushing this sport. Keep on supporting us because it won’t last forever.”
Joshua who is also an Olympic gold medalist becomes the fourth man to win a pro heavyweight world title while still a reigning Olympic champion.
