Dar es Salaam will soon be made just another city in Tanzania as the East African country’s capital is being moved to Dodoma.
Dodoma is about to be made the new capital of Tanzania. The city was created by German colonists during the construction of the Tanzanian central railway. It lies in the heart of Tanzania, which is part of the reason for the move from the seaside former capital.
Dar es Salaam was created by Sultan Majid bin Said in 1866 who created it as a minor haven, it was given its name by the Arabs. In 1891 the capital was initially moved from Bagamoyo to Dar Es Salaam, making it a regional capital– and a colonial one at that. The position of Dar es Salaam as the East African regional capital for the colonial masters was beneficial to the whites and affluent.
When Tanzanians took over the reins of power, the government launched a plan to move the capital to a central location which would serve all of Tanzanians equally without divisions.
The Tanzanian government has been planning to move the capital to Dodoma for decades now with no one actually doing that. The decision was first made by the late Mwalimu Nyerere after the National Executive Committee of the Tanzania African National Union (TANU) in 1973.
TANU was the ruling party in 1973, but after merging with Zanzibar’s Afro Shiraz Party (ASP) it became the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
At the time, the Tanzanian government thought it would only take 10 years for the move to be made to Dodoma, however, it has taken even more than 40 years.
Under President Magufuli, the late Nyerere’s dreams are finally coming through.
State workers are already being told to begin their move to the new capital city. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa stated that everything is ready for the actual movements to begin. He stated that it’s only a matter of days before it happens.
