If Emir Sanusi was not a traditional Muslim ruler, many northerners would have called him an “infidel” who has no truth in him.
Surprisingly Emir Sanusi who is a northern leader has in subsequent order told northerners as well as president Buhari, the truth they have been playing ignorant to.
Nigeria has seen a traditional Muslim leader who exonerated Fulani herdsmen from being called violent murderers. Nigeria has also seen a northern governor who would rather pay off guilty herdsmen than bring them to justice.
For a change Nigeria has also seen a top traditional Muslim leader who has condemned child marriage and preached for more schools to be built especially in the interest of the northern/Muslim girl children.
The Emir publicly requested northerners to put a halt on the sporadic construction of mosques when there are no schools to educate their children.
“Of what benefit is it to the north, having 3 million children roaming about?”
During the 2nd edition of the Kaduna Investment Forum(Kadinvest), an investment programme set up for the economic development of the state, Sanusi says the northern region has been backward for ages because the people have blindly fought education.
Stretching his reservations to the northern leaders, he said north-east and west would be the poorest if Nigeria splits.
“Break Nigeria into its component parts, and these parts of the country are among the poorest, if it were a country. And we do not realize we are in trouble.”
“Other Muslim nations have put forward girl education.”
“Other Muslim countries have pushed on. We are fighting culture, we are fighting civilization.”
“You tell me that you should not write [or] love book in northern Nigerian.”
“What is the crime of those books?”
Perhaps Emir Sanusi is a special kind of breed. A different kind of religious leader who would not only be seen preaching inter-religious unity but takes it a little deeper to the Muslim cultural misconceptions.
The rudiments of the Muslim culture is tied to their religion. In an uncommon fashion, Emir Sanusi admits that the religion has been twisted and used as an excuse to dwell in backwardness.
Moving over to the nation’s economy. Sanusi who had once advised the presidency to quit blaming past administration and get to work, has recently faulted Buhari’s economic plan.
According to the northern leader who has once served as CBN Governor, the economic plan which President Buhari announced a few days ago will only give Nigeria more debts.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria is spending 66 per cent of its revenues on interests on debts, which means only 34 per cent of revenues is available for capital and recurrent expenditures.”
“That model cannot work. If you look at the 2017 budget of the Federal Government, I sometimes wonder what Nigerian economists are doing?”
“China will lend you $1.8 billion to build light rail. This light rail will be done by the rail workers from China. The trains will come from China. The engines will come from China. The labor comes from China. The driver is Chinese.”
“At the end of the day, what do you benefit from it?”
Emir Sanusi declared his reservations over the plan and proffered instead that the government works towards sustainable investments.
