United States authorities has discovered a fake US embassy in Ghana which has operated for as long as 10 years now.
The pink painted 2-storey building has been illegitimately issuing authentic American visas.
According to the US State Department, the fake US embassy situated in the nation’s capital, Accra Ghana, was run by a criminal network.
It is not yet clear how the fake embassy got hold of authentic American visas. The criminals issued them alongside fake identification documents at the cost of $6,000 each.
It was found that Turkish citizens deceived the people while posing as consular officers. The statement, which was released on Friday, also confirmed that another fake Dutch embassy was also fished out in Ghana.
U.S authorities has emphatically stated that the fake embassy did not operate under the American government.
“It was not operated by the United States government, but by figures from both Ghanaian and Turkish organised crime rings and a Ghanaian attorney practicing immigration and criminal law.
“The criminals running the operation were able to pay off corrupt officials to look the other way, as well as obtain legitimate blank documents to be doctored.”
As a point of caution, the one and only real US embassy in Ghana is heavily fortified complex, situated in Cantonments, one of the capital’s most expensive neighborhoods.
The State Department did not give any clue or estimate as to the number of immigrants who may have illegally entered the US through the fake embassy.
US authorities worked in conjunction with the Ghana Detectives Bureau and police as well as other international partners to halt the fake operations.
Report says that such items as “authentic and counterfeit Indian, South African and Schengen Zone visas and 150 passports from 10 different countries along with a laptop and smart phones” were seized during the raid.
