Interesting Facts About Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang


On Thursday, 7th January 2016, African football dignitaries gathered in Abuja to celebrate the annual Glo Confederation of African Footballers (CAF) awards. The event saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang emerge as the African player of the year. Pierre has been a real hard worker in the past year, and it was not surprising that he should be a winner. Life and Family

Aubameyang was born to a Gabonese father, who was also a footballer and a Spanish mother on June 18, 1989 in France.


He currently plays for the Gabon national team. Prior to this, he played for France’s U-21 team and Gabon’s U-23 team. Like his father once was, he is the current captain of the team. He scored Gabon’s first-ever and only goal during the football tournament at the London Olympics of 2012. He is also Gabon’s highest scorer with 19 goals to his credit.


He also plays for Germany’s Borussia Dortmund as a Center Forward, thereby making him the first Gabonese player to play in the Bundesliga. He had played for 14 clubs before joining Borussia Dortmund. He set a record for being the first ever Dortmund player to start a season by scoring a hat trick, where He scored 3 out of the 4 goals against Ausburg during the 2013/2014 season. He is currently the top goal scorer of the Bundesliga, beating Robert Lewandowski and Muller to top the table with 18 goals. His 18 goals make him a top candidate for the Golden shoe award which he might clinch if he remains top for the rest of the season. This would also make him the first African to win this award.

Pierre was recently sought after by English team, Arsenal for a bid of £44.6million which he turned down. According to him,

“I don’t want to go to Arsenal. I won’t leave Dortmund soon”.

Haven won the CAF player of the year trophy, he was deemed undeserving by fellow nominee and 4-time consecutive winner of the  award, Yaya Toure who implicitly stated that Aubameyang’s win brings shame to Africa.

He has a lethal speed. In 2013, he was recorded to have ran 30 metres in 3.7 seconds, almost faster than Usain Bolt.

He was once dubbed the African/Gabon Neymar for their similarities in looks. However, he has made a name for himself and would no longer need that title.

He is a batman fanatic. Having a lot of gears with the batman logo, some of which he uses when celebrating a goal.
