Kenyan Abraham Kator Wins Lagos Marathon 2016 In Nigeria


The first Access Bank marathon started at about 7am. Enthusiastic participants were so eager to #RunLagos. The runners started eagerly, some gave up while some stopped at various scenic points to take selfies. All in all, it was a fun day for the runners.

Abraham Kator of Kenyan Nationality came in top. He ran from Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere to Eko Atlantic in Victoria Island, a distance of 42.195 kilometers under 2 hours, 16 minutes, 21 seconds.

The marathon was no respecter of persons as all and sundry from different nations, races, ethnicity and gender were all allowed to partake.

The first Nigerian, Emmanuel Gyang Gwom finished in 7th place and will receive a N1,000,000 prize.

The marathon had a female category and the winner was an Ethiopian national, Halima Huseen Kayo. She would be going home with $50,000 like her male counterpart.

The event was attended by dignitaries such as the governor of Lagos state, Akinwumi Ambode, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, and Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, current President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).

Also, elite athletes mostly from Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Bahrain, Cameroon and Rwanda were present. Among them were;

  • Kenya’s Josphat Kifanni too who has a Personal Best Time of 2.08.23secs.
  • Peter Kiplagat who won the 2015 Geneva Marathon  as well as  Sammy Kibet; winner of the 2011 Warsaw Marathon, both from Kenya and Abebe Negewo winner of the Rome 2012 Marathon is also expected from Ethiopia.
