Nike Fires Manny Pacquiao After Anti-Gay Comments

Manny Pacquiao is a Filipino world champion professional boxer. He lost the highly anticipated and televised “Fight of the century” last year to Floyd Mayweather but still somehow managed to retain a very fond place in the heart of viewers for his apparent strong Christian views. Those same views however seem to have him on the wrong side of public opinion this time.

Manny who is heavily interested in the politics of Philippines where he’s currently a member of the House of Representatives and is running for the country’s senate, admitted that he may run for President after he retires. He was then asked about his views on gay marriage during an interview with local TV news. He’d gone on to condemn gay marriage, stating blatantly that;

“It’s common sense. Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female? The animals are better. They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve [of] male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animals.”

A much expected backlash to the comments, saw him posting an apology for the statement, although he did not back down from his stance on the matter. He said,

“I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals…Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt. I still stand on my belief that I’m against same-sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I’m not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I’m praying for you.”

Well the apology did not seem to assuage the anger of athletic company Nike which has had a relationship with the boxer since 2006 and they went ahead and fired him yesterday. Nike issued a statement which said;

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent…Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community…We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”
