President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philipines blatantly cursed President Obama, calling him the “son of a whore”. Duterte’s cursing has resulted to the cancellation of a meeting that would have possibly sealed bilateral agreements between the two countries.
Duterte’s cursing came about on the US President’s counter view on the ongoing radical justice on drug dealers in the Philippines.
Unlike the strategies of the Asian leader, President Obama preaches the gospel of due process. Back in America, Obama has been lenient enough to endorse the release of non-violent drug offenders in confinement.
President Duterte in contrast has radically attacked the Filipino drug world, causing the death of about 2400 drug offenders without any form of judicial protocol.
When it comes to drug crimes the Philippines seems to be taking after Indonesia who executes all caught drug offenders by firing squad. Leniency is not regarded or considered, despite international calls to abolish capital punishments.
Indonesia’s adamant stand nearly caused a rift between the country and Brazil on an occasion that involved the killing of a Brazil national.
Perhaps the current misunderstanding between the Filipino and the US president is another of such cases.
Duterte is all out to destroy all drug cartels and businesses in the country. 2 months ago he urged the police force to buckle up for the hard task ahead.
“Double your efforts. Triple them, if need be. We will not stop until the last drug lord, the last financier, and the last pusher have surrendered or [been] put behind bars – or below the ground, if they so wish.”
President Obama made it known in an interview that he would raise the issue of the radical executions without due process. Duterte’s cursing then came forth as a form of reply to Obama who has been working hard to secure mutual ties between the countries.
Recall that it was reported in the past that the US government had given the Asian nation a condition of legalizing abortion and homosexuality before they could grant them aid.
Duterte laudably reacted to Obama’s proposed mission thus,
“Who does he think he is? I am no American puppet. I am the president of a sovereign country and I am not answerable to anyone except the Filipino people… Son of a bitch, I will swear at you.”
After that he went on to accuse the United States government for being a part of the problem in the Philippines.
“As a matter of fact, we inherited this problem from the United States.”
“Why? Because they invaded this country and made us their subjugated people. Everybody has a terrible record of extrajudicial killing. Why make an issue about fighting crime?”
“Look at the human rights of America along that line. The way they treat the migrants there.”
Both world leaders were supposed to meet in Laos this week, where Obama is attending a meeting of Southeast Asian leaders. As a direct result of Duterte’s cursing, the meeting which was scheduled between them has been cancelled.
Duterte has also expressed his regret over the derogatory statements, admitting his words came across as a personal attack on the President of the United States.
