The tale goes on. Oscar Pistorius the paralympic and Olympic who shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 allegedly attempted suicide in prison.
The sportsman who is currently serving jail term was taken to the hospital where he denied trying to end his life.
The denial of Oscar Pistorius’ attempted suicide was reported by Correctional services who said he had told them that he injured himself instead when he fell out of bed.
The Kogosi Mapuru II Correctional center attended to Oscar’s minor injuries on his wrists but further sent him to Kalafong hospital for treatment and was returned to the center. Oscar Pistorius denied speculations of a suicide attempt. As a policy principle, we cannot further discuss a particular offenders personal condition in the public domain.– the statement said.
His brother, Carl Pistorius also supported the claim that Oscar Pistorius’ attempted suicide was not true. He said Pistorius was in “high spirits” and “doing well despite the circumstances”
Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to 6 years in prison for the murder of Steenkamp. This was lower than the 15-year stipulated jail term for murder. The verdict led to criticism from many who believed the judge was favoring Pistorius who has been adjudged to have ‘white privilege’.
South African prosecutors stated their desire to appeal the verdict. The prosecutors cited it as being too lenient, adding that it ridiculed the South African judicial system.
The judge was also branded an embarrassment to the South African judicial system by the ANC Women League.
“First five years, now six years? She is an embarrassment to the justice system,” ANCWL spokeswoman Jacqueline Mofokeng told Reuters.
“It is an insult to women in this country,” she said.
