5 Things You Didn’t Know About Ailee, The Korean-American Singer

Ailee is a Korean-American singer and songwriter popular for her K-pop songs. Before her first release in 2012, Ailee was a trainee at the US-based music agency, YMC Entertainment. As she got more popular for singing on Singer and Trainee, Ailee was offered a role in the KBS drama series Dream High 2. In March 2012, barely a month after releasing her debut song Heaven, Ailee’s spree of awards started rolling in. In the ensuing years, the college dropout rendered incredible works that got her more notable awards such as Best New Artist Award at the Melon Music Awards, and more.

Ailee was born—Amy Lee—in Denver, Colorado, the United States, on May 30, 1989. She spent most of her early life in New Jersey though, where she attended Palisades Park High School before she later moved to a not-so-distant city, Leonia. At Leonia, it is believed she attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School where she graduated from before enrolling in Pace University to study communications. However, Ailee had other plans. Ailee’s Rise To Fame

Before going big, Ailee got signed under a US-based music agency by the name Muzo Entertainment. At Muzo, she got the chance to work with several artists such as Johnnyphlo and rapper Decipher. In 2010, Ailee felt it was time to move back to her origins. She relocated to South Korea and auditioned for YMC Entertainment. Her incredible rendition of Resignation by Big Mama got her recruited on the spot; not as a regular worker though. As a trainee, Ailee was part of Catch Me If You Can, a song by Decipher and Jay Park. She also sang in Wheesung’s They Are Coming.

Two years later, in February 2012, Ailee debuted with the song Heaven. The music video was also released. That same month, she performed her song on stage for the first time on M.net’s M! Countdown and later on SBS’s Inkigayo. By October of that year, she’d released her debut mini-album titled Invitation. Invitation had six songs in all; the title song, I’ll Show You, and five other hit tracks. Later that month, October 18, Ailee performed I’ll Show You on M! Countdown, and landed her first-ever trophy. Plus, she got invited to perform at the pre-Grammy party for the 55th Grammy Awards.

In June 2017, with two successful mini-albums, a full-length album and several singles under her belt, Ailee held her first solo concert in Taiwan, Ailee: Hello Taipei 2017. 1. She was Embroiled in a Scandal

Back in November 2013, Ailee got wound up in a terrible scandal which cost her a huge fan base and affected her career. Fans were left in shock when nude photos of the Kroean beauty surfaced online. It had been published by a Korean site. As investigations dug deeper into how the site got hold of the nudes, it was learned that Ailee had sent the nude photos to a friend over Facebook. However, trouble struck when the account got hacked. The scandal also cost her several advertising campaigns and endorsement deals. Ailee then went on a hiatus for half a year and came back stronger in January 2014.

2. Awards and Recognition

Although she was and is still greatly criticized for the 2013 saga, there’s nevertheless a common consensus that Ailee is good at what she does. And she has a fairly long list of awards to prove that. In March 2012, just one month after releasing her debut album, Ailee clinched two awards for ‘Song of the Month’ and ‘Rookie of the Month’ at the Cyworld Music Awards. She also won the Best New Artist Award at the Asia Song Festival.

Ailee received an award for Best New Artist at the MelOn Music Awards, Golden Disk Awards, Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards and the Seoul Music Awards. What’s more? She was awarded the Best New Female Artist (2012) and four Best Vocal Performance – Female awards at the Mnet Asian Music Awards for her songs, U&I, If You, Mind Your Own Business and Singing Got Better in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively.
