The Son of Rambow star was born William Jack Poulter to his parents, Neil Poulter and Caroline Poulter (née Barrah) on 28th day of January 1993 in Hammersmith, London, England. His father is a medical practitioner and works at Imperial College London as a Professor of Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine while his mother who is from Anglo family in Kenya is a former health worker. Will Poulter was brought up in London along with his elder brother, Ed and two sisters, Charlotte and Jo Poulter. For his academics, the skilled actor was educated at the prestigious The Harrodian School, an independent day school in Barnes, South-west London. He then furthered his education at Bristol University but later dropped out of the university to focus on his acting career.

Will Poulter kicked off his acting career by making his cinematic debut as Lee Carter in 2007 Garth Jennings action-comedy film, Son of Rambow. He went on to make his small screen debut the same year by appearing in two episodes of the TV comedy series, Comedy: Shuffle.
