The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) currently caters to the health needs of over 9 million Kenyans. More so, back in 2015, this scheme is known to have created the National Hospital Insurance outpatient services back in July and over the years, several changes have been made to the act to adequately cater to the healthcare needs of the teeming Kenyan population. This medical scheme also works with a wide range of health care providers across the country to make people have easy access to healthcare services.

What Is The NHIF About?
The National Insurance fund is a Kenya government state corporation with the sole aim of providing health insurance to all Kenyan’s. It was originally established in 1967 as a department within the ministry of health. The original act of parliament that set up this fund in 1966 has been reviewed over the years due to the rapid demand for healthcare and restructuring of the health sector aimed at efficiency and effectiveness.
The scheme which is available to all Kenyans and residents of Kenya who are 18 years and above, has a mission to provide affordable and accessible healthcare services to all its stakeholders. As of now, it is currently working to increase its members to 19 million by 2022. More so, the NHIF also seeks to generate more revenue for the Kenyan government alongside complying with the concept of good governance.
How Can One Register And Become A Member of NHIF?
NHIF registers all those who have been deemed eligible both from the formal and informal sectors. For individuals in the formal sector, being a member of the NHIF is compulsory as stipulated in the act. However, for those in the informal sector and retirees, registration is open and voluntary.
To proceed with the registration in spite of the sector you might find yourself in, you must be 18 years and above with a total income of at least Kshs.1,000 per month or Kshs 12,000 per year. Upon meeting the above criteria, you can go ahead and fill in the Members Form. However, to register as an employer or organized group, you will have to fill in the Employers Form and not the members form.
Here Are The Requirements For Your NHIF Registration
The requirements for being a member of the NHIF in Kenya also varies depending on the category you might fall in. Find below the different categories and necessary registration requirements:
Kenyan Residents
As long as you are a Kenyan and you are 18 years and above, all you need to get enroll on the NHIF is by providing the following:
- A photocopy of your National I.D and that of your spouse if you are married.
- A photocopy of your letter of Appointment or Introduction Letter but this requirment does not apply to those who are self-employed or voluntary contributors.
- A colored passport photo.
4. Colored passport pictures of spouse & dependents if you have any.
5. The original & photocopies of Birth Certificate(s) of your dependants
Foreign Residents
This category is for persons who are not Kenyans but are living and working in Kenya. Which means they are deriving income in the country. They can hereby be a part of the NHIF by providing the following documents:
- Photocopies of their international passport, alien certificate, or work permit.
- If you are married, submit the documents (international passport, alien certificate or work permit) of your spouse as well.
- A colored passport picture
- Colored passport pictures of spouse & dependents if you have any
Foreign Students
Non-Kenyan who have been granted permission to study and work in Kenya can also become members of the NHIF. The following requirements are needed to get them enrolled on the scheme:
- A photocopy of your international passport

Employers
Owners of business establishments fall under the formal sector and it is mandatory for them to register on the NHIF. They can easily do so by providing:
- Their business registration certificate

Benefits Individuals Enjoy From The NHIF
Being a member of the NHIF comes with several benefits and they cut across all regions of human health. In addition to that, the various health covers also come with life insurance packages which are available to all customers. However, as of now, the benefits are apportioned based on whether the individul is an inpatients or an outpatient.
Inpatient Benefits
- Payment of hospital bed charges
- Covers nursing care charges
- Payment of diagnostic, laboratory, and any other medically necessary facilities or services.
- Offsetting of physician’s, surgeons’, anesthetists’, or physiotherapist’s charges
- Covers operating theatre charges
- Payment of specialist consultations or visits fees
- Cost of all drugs, dressings, or medications prescribed by the physician which will be used in-hospital.
Outpatient Benefits
This category covers the medical treatment and services provided to all those whose health conditin does not warrant that they are hospitalized. The neccessary treatment giving to such individuals is in accordance to what is outlined in the Kenya Essential Package for Health (KEPH) and they include the following:
- Payment of consultation fees
- Cover the cost of laboratory investigations
- Cover charges for drug administration and dispensing
- Payemnt of dental health care services
- Offsets the cost of radiological examination
- Covers the charges for nursing and midwifery services
- Payment for minor surgical services
- Covers the cost of physiotherapy services
- Pays for optical care
- Covers the cost of occupational therapy services
- Covers referral for specialized services
