The multiple award-winning American actor, Aaron Paul, became prominent in the entertainment industry following his portrayal of Jesse Pinkman in the AMC television series, Breaking Bad. He has earned several awards as a result of his remarkable performance in the series, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a Critics’ Choice Television Award.
But while he will forever be known for his role as Jesse Pinkman, Aaron has also featured in multiple music videos, television shows, and films. He is an accomplished actor, renowned for playing different characters, but especially Todd Chavez in the Netflix animated series, BoJack Horseman.
Between those two iconic roles, Aaron Paul has proven himself to be a versatile actor, with critical and commercial acclaim to show for it.
Aaron Paul’s Journey From Idaho to Hollywood
The famous actor is the youngest child of Robert and Darla Sturtevant. He was born as Aaron Paul Sturtevant in Emmett, Idaho, United States, on August 27, 1979. The actor was born a month earlier than the expected date in their residential home.
After completing his basic education, the Breaking Bad star moved to Los Angeles with his mother in his 1982 Toyota Corolla. Shortly after, Aaron Paul appeared in an episode of the game show, The Price is Right. During that time, he also got a job as a movie theatre usher at Universal Studios, Hollywood. While Paul was in Los Angeles, he participated in the International Modeling and Talent Association contest. Interestingly, he clinched a runner-up position in the competition, which aided him to sign a manager.
During his short-term spell as a model, he made several appearances on television commercials for brands such as Vanilla Coke, Corn Pops, and Juicy Fruit. The talented actor moved on to feature in multiple music videos including Everlast’s song, White Trash Beautiful, and Thoughtless by Korn.
Back to scripted works, Aaron made his first appearance in 1998, in an uncredited role in the TV movie, Even the Losers. He made several screen appearances between then and 2008, many of which were on television. By the time he got cast as Jesse Pinkman, Aaron Paul had recorded credits in 40 TV shows, short films, and feature films. Most of them were on television, setting the foundation for him to become a legend of the medium via Breaking Bad.
He Made A Name For Himself With ‘Breaking Bad’ And ‘Bojack Horseman’
Since making his debut in 1998, the Idaho-born actor has gone on to receive forty award nominations and has twenty wins. Expectedly, the bulk of his awards come from his work on Breaking Bad and BoJack Horseman.
He Received 35 Nominations for Jesse Pinkman
In the AMC drama, Breaking Bad, Aaron Paul plays Jesse Pinkman – a crystal meth cook and dealer who worked with his former high school chemistry teacher, Walter White. The initial plan at the conception of the show was to kill off his character at the end of the first season.
However, Paul impressed both the audience and the showrunner, Vince Gilligan, so much that he decided to keep him in the show. This decision sparked the start of a legendary run on the iconic show to become one of the only two characters to appear in every episode of the show.
Aaron made his first splash on the award circuit for Jesse Pinkman in 2009. He received Primetime Emmy, Gold Derby TV, and OFTA Television Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, winning the latter two.
Over the years, he received subsequent awards from other bodies, including the Golden Globes, Saturn Awards, Critics Choice, Satellite Award, and SAG Awards.
Aaron Paul has a total of five nominations from the Emmys for the role, winning three of them. The victories make him one of only two actors to win the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category thrice. The other? Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones.
He also reprised the role in the Netflix film, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, receiving an additional three nominations for his performance. In all, Aaron has received 35 nominations for playing Jesse Pinkman, winning 18 of them.
Aaron Paul Has Found Success in a Voice Role as Todd Chavez
His Breaking Bad role might be the role the world best knows him for. However, Aaron Paul has shown to be quite versatile enough to earn accolades playing Todd Chavez in BoJack Horseman. He began starring in the Netflix animated show in 2014, and aside from his primary role, has played four other characters – Henry Fondle, Prince Gustav, Skippy, and Emperor Fingerface.
Voice acting requires a different skill, and things get a lot more complicated when you must play other characters too. But Aaron proved to be just as talented at it as he is at live-action acting.
Like his Breaking Bad stint, his character has appeared in every episode of the show. He has also received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program as part of the show’s production team.
