Akon will be awarded for his efforts in a project very dear to our hearts; the “Akon Lighting Africa” project which seeks to and has to an extent managed to make solar power available to rural African villages.
He started out the humanitarian effort in 2007 with the establishment of the Konfident Foundation. The foundation had initially focused on providing the youth of Senegal with educational resources and access to healthcare services.
Seven years after however, alongside partners, Akon had established the Akon Lighting Africa and according to a release by BET, the project has yielded “solar-powered electricity to the homes of over 600 million people in more than 11 countries in rural Africa.”
The release by BET also acknowledges that;
“He also helped launch the Solar Academy in Bamako, Mali, where engineers will be taught how to develop solar power, and has expanded his impact beyond Africa by teaming up with government officials in several Latin American countries, including Brazil, to bring electricity to needy homes.”
For all these contributions, Akon will receive the BET humanitarian award for this year. The Global Good Award is presented as a part of the “BET Awards”.
