Established in 1967 under the ministry of health, Kenya’s National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is mandated to assist Kenyan residents acquire affordable healthcare. By having branches all over the country, and easily accessible contacts and customer care number, the NHIF is a step closer to doing as promised. However, it has not always been smooth sailing for the organization as it has gone through changes over the years, some of which were warranted by the scandals it has faced. For instance, the NHIF lost as much as 479 million shillings in the 2003 Euro Bank Scandal. Later, it also faced the 2012 civil servants’ scheme scandal shouldering allegations of irregularities which included the creation of unapproved NHIF units, payment to ghost clinics, and many more.
In all of these misfortunes, NHIF has kept up with its mandate which revolves around providing affordable, accessible, and quality health insurance for all citizens of the East African country. To fulfill this mandate, the insurance organization has branches spread across the counties of the country.
How to Contact NHIF Headquarters
You should know that the NHIF membership is open to each and every citizen of the Republic of Kenya as long as they are 18 years old and above, and earn more than KES 1000 per month.
The organization has no fewer than 90 fully autonomous branches and satellite offices across the country. Of course, each of the branches offers everything on NHIF’s program but if you must contact the head office in particular, below is how to go about it. Nonetheless, keep in mind that they only work from 8 AM to 5 PM, Mondays to Friday.

Things You Must Visit the NHIF Offices With for Registration
If you have to visit or contact any of the NHIF branches listed above, you will most likely need to register and become a member of the scheme. If this is so, you should know there are things you must have present for registration. It is important to note that becoming an NHIF member is open to all citizens of Kenya. But to qualify, you must be 18 years old. You must also be earning more than KES 1000 per month.
Contrary to what many have come to believe, the National Hospital Insurance Fund wasn’t created for government workers. Every eligible citizen of the country is free to join and it even has provisions for foreign students and non-Kenyans residing in the country. However, membership is compulsory for Kenyans in the formal sector and voluntary for those in the informal sector and retirees.
Certain documents are required for each of the categories above for registration in any of the NHIF branches across the country. Below is a breakdown of the required documents.
Documents Required from Foreign Students in Kenya
Registered foreign students in the country are required to contribute Kshs 500 per month. This is also the same for those under the voluntary and self-employed category. To register, come with the following:
- A copy of your passport
- Colored passport photo
Documents Required from Foreigners Living in Kenya
If you are a non-Kenyan legally living in the country, you can also become an NHIF member. Visit any of the NHIF branches above with the following for registration.
- Copies of passport, alien certificate, or work permit.
- Copies of spouse passport, alien certificate, or work permit.
- Colored passport photo, including that of your spouse and dependents.
Documents Required from Kenyan Citizens for Registration
To register in any of the NHIF branches, a Kenyan citizen is expected to present the following:
- A copy of your National I.D and that of your spouse if applicable.
- A copy of Employer Appointment or Introduction Letter; this is only for an employee and not required if you are self-employed
- A colored passport photo, as well as passport photos of your spouse and dependents if applicable.
- The original and copies of birth certificate for dependents.
NHIF Registration Can Also Be Done Online
If you are not cut-out for visiting any of the NHIF branches for registration, you can get it done yourself online. Below is a quick guide on how to go about it.
Step 1 – Visit the NHIF website and click on “Online Registration” or click here to get to the registration page directly.
Step 2 – You can either register as an “Employer”, “Employee”, or “Self Employed”. Click on the one that applies to you and select “Register Now”.
Step 3 – You will be led to a page with the “Application Form”; provide the required information accurately.
Step 4 – After you have filled all the fields and attached all the required documents, click “Save” to submit your application.
