Angel-faced actress Anya Taylor-Joy has carved out a unique niche for herself through her portrayals in horror movies. Her flair for holding down roles in scary thriller movies like The Witch (2015), Split (2016), and Morgan (2016) has earned her the nickname Scream Queen, a BAFTA Rising Star nomination, a Cannes Film Festival’s Young Actors Trophee Chopard among others.
The multiracial American actress originally started her career with ballerina and in her teens, she picked up interest in modeling before she stumbled on the opportunity to mine her trade as an actress, a decision that has seen her appear in a couple of movies and TV shows so far. For an actress who made her professional debut in 2014, Anya has a massive fanbase that keeps up with her career as much as they follow the events of her personal life.
Taylor-Joy Has Always Wanted To Become An Actress
Anya-Josephine Taylor-Joy was born on 16th April 1996 in Miami, Florida to an English-Spanish mom and a Scottish-Argentine father as the last of six children. Her father was an international banker turned motorboat racer while her mom was a photographer and interior designer. Her family moved from Miami to Argentina when she was just an infant. She spent her early childhood in Argentina before her family relocated to England when she was six years old.
Her parents sent her to an elementary school in Kensington where she learned how to speak the English language, little Anya spoke only Spanish until she was about 8 years of age. She also attended Queens Gate School in the city of London.
Anya Taylor-Joy was training to be a ballet dancer but couldn’t follow it through due to her family’s constant movement between South America and Europe. She was discovered by Sarah Doukas, a modeling agent who signed her up as a model when she was 16 years old. It was while working as a model that the young actress met and signed up with an acting agent.
The actress told People that she had always known she wanted to be an actress. According to her, she has “too many feelings” and acting is part of her ways of expressing. Reiterating this statement in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, the actress related that she never fit in as a kid and that being on a movie set makes her feel complete.
The Witch Facilitated Her Rise to Fame
Given the clout she has earned as an actress, it is difficult to imagine that Anya auditioned for roles she never got. From what we have gathered, her first audition was for the 2014 fantasy film Maleficent that starred Angelina Jolie. Being a big Disney fan, she was very interested in being a part of the project and cried for days when she failed to actualize this.
Later in the same year, she got a role in the fantasy comedy horror film Vampire Academy, but her scene was deleted. That same year, she played Mani in a television film titled Viking Quest and also portrayed Philippa Collins-Davidson in an episode of Endeavour, a British detective drama series.
In 2015, Anya Taylor-Joy caught the eye of movie lovers in her outstanding portrayal of Thomasin in Robert Eggers’ horror movie, The Witch. Her performance was so spectacular it earned her no fewer than 16 nominations from different bodies, out of which she won a handful. The role was the first one to make a significant impact on her career.
