2016 has come to an end and will forever be remembered by sports lovers for different reasons. We have, however, gone ahead to look back at the 10 best sporting moments the year had to offer.

The list below comprises of stories which have not just made headlines but touched our hearts from a selection of sports events.

1) LeBron James

LeBron James chases down and blocks Andre Iguodala in the fourth quarter of Game 7 of the NBA Finals to save two points.

The Cleveland Cavaliers rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to be crowned champions, becoming the first team in NBA Finals history to achieve such feat. It was also the first-ever title for the Cavaliers.


2) Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo works as the coach in the finals of Euro 2016 between Portugal and France on July 10. The world’s best player was forced to leave the game with a knee injury following a tackle by Dimitri Payet.

Portugal went on to win the game 1-0.

3) Chinese Athlete Proposal

Love was in the air at the Rio Olympics diving pool when Zi who got silver in the women’s 3-meter springboard accepted an engagement ring from boyfriend and fellow diver Qin Kai.

4) Micheal Phelps and Chad le Clos

South African swimmer Chad le Clos takes a glance at Micheal Phelps during the Olympic final of the 200m butterfly in Rio.

Phelps un-retired and decided to compete in the category, specifically because he thought the field was slow. Le Clos responded to Phelps’ statement after winning gold in the 100m butterfly saying:

”I just did a 100m butterfly time that Phelps hasn’t done in four years.. he can keep quiet now.”

The rest is history.

5) Usain Bolt

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt takes time to smile for a picture and look back at his competitors during a 100m semifinal race at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

He later became the first man to win the 100m category in three straight Olympic games.

6) North And South Korea

Hostilities between the Korean peninsula neighbours were set aside as South Korean gymnast Lee Eun-ju posed for a selfie with North Korea’s Hong Un-jong at the Rio Olympics.

7) Leicester City

Arguably the best sporting moments of 2016, Leicester City celebrating their win with the Premier League trophy after beating Everton at the King Power Stadium on May 7, 2016.

8) Lionel Messi

Argentina’s Lionel Messi reacts angrily after missing his penalty in a shootout against Chile in the final of the Copa America Centenario to rank in the best sporting moments of 2016.

Messi went on to announce his retirement from the national team following the loss. He and Argentina had lost three finals in three years.

9) Rickie Fowler

American golfers pose for a team photo while kissing their wives and girlfriends as Rickie Fowler shrugged. It was their first Ryder Cup victory in 8 years.

10) Sea Turtle

And the best picture of the best sporting moments of 2016 goes to this sea turtle in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, who swam under iron man triathletes.
