Bio (Age) – Who Is Big Boi (Rapper)?
The Hip-hop singer’s real name is Antwan Andre Patton and he was born on February 1st, 1975, in Savannah, Georgia, the United States. His father was a US Marine Corps Officer and his mother, a supervisor for a retail company.
He schooled at Herschel V. Jenkins High School but later changed school to the Tri-Cities High School where he studied visual and performing arts after his family moved from Savannah to Atlanta.
In pursuit of his dream to become a musician in Tri-Cities, Patton met his fellow Outkast member Andre 3000 (Andre Lauren Benjamin) in the early 1990s. The duo had a lot of things in common, like their clothing style which made them stand out from other students. Considering their common love for hip hop artists like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, it was easy for the two to become friends.
Eventually, Patton and Benjamin joined forces and formed the rap group Outkast in 1992. They were subsequently signed by Atlanta-based record label LaFace Records and came out in 1994 with their debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. Thereafter, the group released ATliens in 1996, Aquemini in 1998, and Stankonia in 2000. The albums all performed well; their lyrics essentially agitated against the societal ills of Afro-American communities. Lyrics of singles like War from the Stankonia album spoke against the George W Bush administration.
A handful of years later, Patton and his partner decided to release solo albums. They did so, launched them under the group name as a double album, packed it together and called it Speakerboxxx /The Love Below. The double album which was released in 2003 consisted of Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx and Andre 3000’s The Love Below. The single The Way You Move from Big Boi’s album topped the US Pop Charts.
In 2015, Big Boi collaborated with the Purple Ribbon All-stars, a hip-hop group, and they released the mixtape/album Got Purp? Vol 2 on November 22nd that year. The single Kryptonite ranked 35th in the Billboard Hot 100.
The rapper’s full-fledged solo effort came in 2007 when he released Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. The song’s first single featured Andre 3000 and Raekwon. Meanwhile, the album which was officially launched in July that year featured guest artists like T.I, B.o.B, and Janelle Monae.
Big Boi was featured on the single Mother of Dragons which was on the mixtape Catch the Throne, published on Sound Cloud sometime in March 2014 by the American Cable TV satellite network, HBO. The rapper signed a record deal with Epic Records in May 2014 and in April 2017, he released another album titled Boomiverse. The next year, he was signed up by L.A Reid and Hitco Music.
Big Boi has also made TV appearances. In 2006, he featured in Nick Cannon’s Wild ’n Out as well as in other comedy movies like ATL and Idlewild. He portrayed Got’s Money, a rap artist in the TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unity.
