The South Korean pop musical group, The Blackpink has set many remarkable records in the international music charts and in the Asian charts as well. The group which is made up of four members whose names are Rosé, Jennie, Jisoo and Lisa have also received numerous awards following their exploits in the music industry. In August 2016, a South Korean entertainment company established in 1996 by Yang Hyun-Suk called YG Entertainment Inc., which operates as a record label, talent agency, music production company, event management, and concert production company unveiled a female musical group called, The Blackpink. The group is made up of Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé who have been trained by the talent agency for some years after becoming the winners of their various auditions. Jennie is a talented rapper and singer who was born as Jennie Kim in Seoul Capital Area, South Korea on 16 January 1996. She is the only child of her parents. At the age of eight, she traveled alongside her parents to Australia and New Zealand and then, decided to reside in New Zealand where she attended Waikowhai intermediate school, Cheongsam Middle School, Chungdam High School and ACG Parnell College. Having emerged as the winner of the YG Entertainment audition, she joined the talent agency as a trainee. She was trained for six years before being unveiled as a member of The Blackpink in 2016.

Prior to that, she has featured in the music video of her labelmate, G-Dragon titled ‘That XX’ and has also released the cover of many songs as well. She additionally embarked on a solo career in October 2018, releasing her single, ‘Solo’ which became the most viewed music video by a female Korean artist of all time in the first 24 hours of release. She also became the only female Korean singer to have gained more than 300 million views on YouTube within six months.

Then following her performance in the Coachella Music Festival in April 2019, Jennie became the first Korean solo artist to perform in the music festival. She also claimed the song of the Year Award during the 8th edition of Gaon Chart Music Awards. As an actress, Jennie has featured in the variety show, Village Survival, the Eight.

Roseanne Park who is known by her professional name Rosé was born in Auckland, New Zealand on 11th February 1997. When she was seven, she relocated to Melbourne, Australia along with her parents and there, she schooled at Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College. At the age of 15, she auditioned with YG Entertainment in Australia and she emerged first among the 700 contestants. Then in 2012, she was featured in G-Dragon’s song, ‘Without You’ before she became a member of The Blackpink in 2016.

She has made appearances in variety shows like Fantastic Duo 2 and King of Masked Singer. She is currently working on her solo career debut as she is the next in line to release her own songs amongst The Blackpink members.

Jisoo

Born as Kim Ji-soo in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea on 3rd January 1995, the South Korean singer who is known by her stage name Jisoo has also worked as a model and actress. She became a YG Entertainment trainee in 2011. She has featured in series like The Producers, Arthdral Chronicles and equally served as the host of the music program, Inkigayo. She has also appeared in commercials for brands like Nikon, LG Electronics, Smart Uniform, and others.

Lisa

Popularly known by her stage name, Lisa, Pranpriya Manoban who later changed her name to Lalisa, was born in Buriram Province, Thailand on 27th March 1997. She is a rapper, singer, dancer, and model. She won the Special team Award with the We Zaa Cool dance crew in 2009 they participated in the LG Entertainment Million Dream Saman World Competition. Lisa joined YG Entertainment in 2011 as she became their first foreign trainee. She has modeled for several brands like Moonshot, Samsung Galaxy S10, AIS Thailand and others. She became the most followed Korean pop music artist on Instagram in April 2019 with 17.4 million followers then.

What Are They Known For?

The Blackpink group are known as the highest-charting female Korean pop group on US Billboard Hot 100 where their song, ‘Kill This Love’ peaked at No. 41 and equally on Billboard 200 were the same song peaked at No. 24. They are also known as the only female Korean act to have multiple entries on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart as of 2018 and also the first Korean girl group to perform at Coachella Music Festival.

Some of their songs include ‘Boombaya’, ‘Whistle’, ‘Stay’, ‘As If It’s Your Last’, ‘Forever Young’, ‘See U Later’. Blackpink’s first single album is titled, ‘Square One’ while the second album is ‘Square Two’. They released their first extended play titled, ‘Square Up’ in 2018 and their second extended play, ‘Kill The Love’ was dropped in April 2019.
