One of YouTube’s first viral stars and most exciting young comedians in the world, Bo Burnham has wowed critics and comedy aficionados alike. He has often been regarded as the Justin Bieber of comedy because of his fresh-faced looks, floppy blond hair, and hoodies. With a multi-faceted career bigger than those of other comedians twice his age, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to describe Burnham who has produced shows that have a high-strung and smash-cut rhythm, as the future of comedy. Here is all you need to know about the comedian, singer, actor, director and screenwriter that’s been enthusiastically embraced as the quintessential comedian for a generation growing up online.
A Hamilton native, Bo Burnham was born on August 21, 1990, in Massachusetts, USA. He is the youngest of the three children of his parents Scott Burnham, a construction company owner, and Patricia Burnham, a nurse. He grew up in his hometown Hamilton, a suburb of Boston, alongside his two older siblings, Pete and Samm who both work in construction. Bo attended St. John’s Preparatory School, Danvers, an all-boys’ Catholic high school where he graduated from in 2008. Bo always had a flair for the arts and as a child, he also considered becoming a pastor. In high school, he was involved in theatre and the campus ministry program.
Bo’s comedy skits began in his early childhood when he was recording videos mimicking his family members on a camcorder. As a little boy, he would perform in front of his family and they would cheer him. Also in school, Bo would entertain his classmates with self-written political and social satire songs, and they would urge him on.
He soon started making videos of his satirical songs from his bedroom and at age 16, he posted his first video to YouTube when the platform was just less than two years old. His first video was a song titled “My Whole Family Thinks I’m Gay”, which was intended to be a comic message to his older brother who had just gone away to college. But in a surprising turn of events, it went viral getting a million hits a day and positive reviews, and Burnham soon established his status as one of YouTube’s first viral stars.
Consequently, Bo who was set to study theatre at New York University never made it to college. Instead, he became a full-time standup, especially popular with college kids. He focused on his burgeoning media career and toured increasingly complex and self-scrutinizing one-man shows. At age 18, he became the youngest comic to have his own special on Comedy Central. By his mid-20s, he went on to perform stand-up comedy around the country, star in his own TV show and film four comedy specials.
Besides his comedy career, Bo is also a singer and actor. He has two albums to his credit; his debut album Bo Fo Sho was released in 2008 and the sophomore album Words Words Words (2010). As an actor, he has featured in the short-lived MTV sitcom Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, and also starred in several movies including American Virgin, Funny People, Parks, and Recreation, Rough Night, amongst others.
Burnham eventually stopped doing stand-up and begun making movies. He has written and directed his first feature film, “Eighth Grade,” a coming-of-age drama that captures what it’s like to be a teenager in this digital age. Inspired by Burnham’s own experiences performing and growing up online, the movie chronicles the life of a 13-year-old wannabe YouTube star through her last week of middle school.
A cult comedy star right from his teenage days, Bo Burnham has a successful career and has definitely earned himself a modest financial portfolio. The veteran stand-up comedian, singer, actor, and producer has a net worth currently estimated at $4 million, a figure that is expected to increase at a prolific rate, given his many creative endeavors in the showbiz industry.
Bo Burnham’s Girlfriend, Wife, Married, Is He Gay?
Bo Burnham has never been married and does not have a wife, at least for now. But given that Bo supports homosexuality which is evident in some of his shows and works, his sexuality has raised eyebrows. For instance, in his song, My Whole Family Thinks I’m Gay, though his lyrics relate with the gay community, he categorically ends by stressing that he is NOT gay.
More so, the former YouTube sensation loves to keep his private life under wraps and has always maintained that he is single. However, he has been rumored to be in a serious relationship of over 5 years with a girl from “a nearby suburban town”. But that information remains unconfirmed.
With his lanky physique, Bo stands at a towering height of 6 ft 5 inches and looks more like an overgrown teenager.
