Brett Charles Young was born in Anaheim, Orange County, California, USA, on March 23, 1981. He grew up to attend Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa, California. While in high school, Young played as a pitcher on his high school baseball team and led the squad to a CIF championship. He would later go on to attend the University of Mississippi on a baseball scholarship in 1999; declining pre-draft selections by Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Minnesota Twins.
