BtoB which stands for Born to Beat is a seven-member South Korean boy band created by a South Korean entertainment company, Cube Entertainment Inc., in 2012. Since the release of their debut extended play, ‘Born to Beat’, the group has released three studio albums, two compilation albums, eleven extended plays and thirty-one singles. Some of their songs have peaked at several music charts including ‘Beep Beep’, their fourth extended play which clenched the No. 1 spot on Gaon Album Chart and their hit single titled ‘Missing You’ that peaked at No. 2 on Gaon Digital Chart.

Having attained a global recognition, BtoB was made ambassadors of the Korean Tourism Organization in 2017. They have received several accolades as a result of their performances so far and they include Seoul Music Awards, Melon Music Awards, Korea Popular Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards and many others. Who are The BtoB Members?

Prior to making their debut as a group, Cube Entertainment listed Lee Minwoo, Lee Minhyuk, SEO Eunkwang, Im Hyunsik, Jung Ilhoon as the original members of the boy band who were gearing towards their debut. However, in March 2012, the boy band was debuted without Lee Minwoo and this got the fans angry. The talent agency went on to reveal that Minwoo had health problems which prevented him from blending with the group. So the members of the multi-award-winning group include Seo Eun-kwang, Lee Chang-sub, Im Hyun-sik, Lee Min-hyuk, Yook Sung-jae, Peniel Shin and Jung Il-hoon. Below are their profiles;

Seo Eun-kwang

Seo Eun-kwang is the leader and main vocalist of BtoB. He was born on 22nd November 1990 in Yongin, Gyeonggi, South Korea. He is a singer, entertainer and actor who is a graduate of Dongshin University. He released a digital single with Yoo Sung-eun, titled ‘Love Virus’ in 2012. He has made appearances on several variety shows and musical dramas like We Got Married, National Singing Competition, King of Mark Singer, Real Life Men and Women 2, Hamlet, Three Musketeers and others.

Lee Min-hyuk

Commonly known as Minhyuk or Huta, Lee Min-hyuk is a South Korean vocalist, songwriter, rapper and actor. He was born in Seoul, South Korea on 29th November 1990. He is a graduate of Kwangsung High School and Dankok University. He began his solo career in 2017 when he self-produced a single ‘Purple Rain’ featuring CHEEZE. He has starred in New Leaf, Sweet, Savage Family, Nightmare Teacher, Unexpected Heroes, Number Six, The Swordsman and others.

Lee Chang-sub

Known as BtoB’s vocalist, Lee Chang-sub has also contributed in the composition of the lyrics of BtoB songs like ‘Last Day’, ‘Killing Me’ and ‘Melody’. He was born in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea on 26th February 1991. He attended Gowon University and there, he studied Practical Music. He debuted his solo career with the release of his album titled, ‘bpm 82.5’ and also released a Korean solo album ‘Mark’ in 2018. He has featured in series and shows such as Monster, Law of the Jungle in Mongolia, Battle Trip, King of Masked Singer and others.

Im Hyun-sik

Born on March 7th 1992 in Seoul, South Korea, Im Hyun-sik is the son of a South Korean singer, Im Ji-hoon. He is an alumna of Howon University. He serves as a vocalist of the boy band and has assisted in composing the lyrics of ‘Missing You’, ‘Killing Me’, ‘Only One for Me’ and ‘I’ll Be Your Man (Pray)’. He has appeared in The Heirs, When a Man Falls in Love, Law of the Jungle in Mexico, and Immortal Songs 2.

Peniel Shin

Peniel Shin is a Korean-American singer who is based in South Korea. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, the United States on March 10, 1993. Also known as Shin Dong-genn, Peniel is BtoB’s rapper. He attended Barbara B Rose Elementary School and Barrington Middle School based in the US before graduating from Chungdam High School in Seoul, South Korea after his relocation. He has released singles titled, ‘That Girl’, ‘Fly 23’ and ‘Flip’ as a soloist. He has served as the host of the music program, Pop in Seoul and has featured in Law of the Jungle in Samatra.

Jung Il-hoon

Jung Il-hoon who is the younger brother of Singer, Joo was born in Seoul, South Korea on 4th October 1994. He is a graduate of Hamlin Multi Art School and Korea College of Media Arts. He is a rapper, songwriter, record producer and actor known as BtoB’s rap artist. He has released his first solo album, ‘Big Wave’ and singles like ‘Fancy Shoes’, ‘She’s Gone’ and ‘Spoiler’. He has made appearances in Webtoon Hero: Tundra Show, Weekly Idol, KBS Music Shuffle, The Hit, among others.

Yook Sung-jae

Yook Sung-jae is the third-generation leader and vocalist of BtoB. He was born in Yongi, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea on May 2, 1995. He is a singer, actor, entertainer and host. He is known for his roles in series like The Village: Achiara’s Secret, Who Are You: School 2015 and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, which won him multiple awards. He is an alumnus of Hamlin Multi Art School and Dongshin University.

Have They Disbanded or Still Together?

BtoB created their first sub-unit called BtoB Blue in 2016 which consists of vocalists – Changsub, Hyunsik, Eunkwang and Sung-jae. Notwithstanding, the boy band are still together as all seven members renewed their contracts in 2017. The group held a celebration for their seventh anniversary in March 2019, although Seo Eun-kwang, Lee Min-hyuk and Lee Chang-sub have gone for their military service, which leaves the group with four active members. The boy band released a digital single titled, ‘Sorry’ on 5th April 2019.
