BTS is a popular Korean boy group, made up of seven members selected through an audition in 2013 by Big Hit Entertainment Corporation. What Does BTS Stand For?
BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan, a Korean phrasing that literally means Bulletproof Boy Scouts. One of the group members, J-Hope threw more light on it by stating that the name expresses their longing to avoid criticisms, high expectations, and stereotypes that hurt adolescents like bullets. BTS is also known in Japan as Bōdan Shōnendan which has the same meaning as Bangtan Sonyeondan. Following the quest to rebrand their identity, the boy group released an official statement on July 2017 that BTS will also stand for ‘Beyond the Scene’ which connotes BTS growing beyond the realities they are facing.

RM is the stage name of the rapper, songwriter, and record producer, Kim Nam-joon who is the lead rapper and leader of BTS. RM stands for ‘Rap Monster’ before he later changed it to ‘Real Me’. He was born on 12th September 1994 in Dongjak-gu, South Korea. He self-taught himself English language through his regular watching of the American sitcom, Friends. The BTS leader’s second mixtape, ‘Mono’ released in October 2018 became the highest-charting album by a Korean soloist on the Billboard 200 chart after peaking at No. 26.
Jin is a South Korean songwriter and singer who is the songster of the BTS. Born on 4th December 1992 as Kim Seok-jin in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do. The singer who initially wanted to be an actor rejected an offer from SM Entertainment when he was in high school. He is currently studying Theatre and Film at Global Cyber University after obtaining a degree in Art and Acting on 22nd February 2019 from Konkuk University, both situated in South Korea.
Suga’s real name is Min Yoon-gi but he is known professionally as Suga and Agust D. Born on 9th March 1993 in Daegu, South Korea, he attended Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School. He is a rapper, songwriter and record producer who is managed by Big Hit Entertainment. He has written and produced over 70 songs including Suran’s ‘Wine’ which won Best R&B track of the year at the 2017 Melon Music Awards.
J-Hope is the professional name of the Korean rapper, songwriter, dancer, and record producer, Jung Ho-seok who was born on 18th February 1994 in Gwangju, South Korea. Prior to signing with BTS, he was a member of an underground dance team named Neuron and took dance lessons at Gwangju Music Academy. He was quite popular for his dancing skills which made him win many local dance prizes including clinching the first position in a national dance competition in 2008.
Jimin was born as Park Ji-min on 13th October 1995 in Geumjeong District, Busan, South Korea. He is a singer, songwriter and dancer and holds the position of a dancer and vocalist in BTS. He has released two singles, ‘Lie’ and ‘Serendipity’ under BTS. He attended Just Dance Academy where he mastered popping and locking dance. He followed it up by studying contemporary dance at Busan High School of Arts and graduated top of the class.
V is the professional name of the Korean singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor, Kim Tae-hyung. He was born on 30th December 1995 in Seo District, Daegu, South Korea. He serves as a songster on the BTS boy group. While in middle school, he took saxophone classes to hone his musical skill. Following his graduation from Korean Arts High School in 2014, he enrolled at Global Cyber University. He has featured in 2016 Korean drama film, Hwarang.
Jungkook was born as Jeon Jung-kook on 1st September 1997 in Busan, South Korea. He is a singer, songwriter and record producer who is a vocalist in BTS. During the summer of 2012, he traveled to Los Angeles to hone his dancing skills at Movement Lifestyle. Following his graduation from Seoul’s School of Performing Arts in 2017, the BTS singer joined his other band members by enrolling at Global Cyber University. He has released two singles titled ‘Begin’ and ‘Euphoria’ under BTS and has appeared on a South Korean variety show, Celebrity Bromance.
