Understanding Cenk Uygur’s Move From Republican to Progressive, His Career Hats and Family

Cenk Uygur is a whole lot of things; a broadcaster, journalist, lawyer, businessman, writer, and even an activist. However, Uygur is widely known for being the creator and host of the online show The Young Turks. The show basically covers progressive political and social commentary. It is also doing quite well altogether as it records over 200 million views a month and a whopping 8 billion in total views. Based on this, it is ranked among the most-watched online news networks worldwide.

Aside from being famous as a media personality, there is a lot more to The Young Turks host. He was a candidate for California’s 25th congressional district in the 2020 special election to replace Katie Hill who resigned in 2019. Even though he was defeated in the primary, coming fourth with 6.6% of the vote, Uygur continues to move forward in his career as a politician.

Cenk Uygur’s Political Stance and Orientation Have Evolved Over The Years

One thing to appreciate about Uygur is his willingness to grow and his open mind about a variety of things. He seems to imbibe and work by the popular saying ‘change is a constant thing’ as he is one individual that has been liberal in his exploration of the different political orientations in the United States.

Uygur was initially a Republican in the 90s and during that time he received a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School. However, by the year 2000, he became disillusioned with the traditional political system and decided to be a nonpartisan politician. He was an Independent between the year 2000 to 2016. This was the period that he created the talk show, The Young Turks turning it into a powerhouse media and YouTube station.

In 2016, Uygur eventually joined the Democratic party where he has remained to date. He is still very critical of the party’s politics and continues to call for a revitalization process in the US Democratic party. This made him co-found the Justice Democrats who seek to steer the Democratic Party towards the strongly progressive and social democratic as espoused by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. More so, in mid-November 2019, Uygur decided to run for Congress in California’s 25th district after Katie Hill resigned. He came out 4th out of 12 candidates with a 6.6% share of the vote.

He Has Recorded Remarkable Strides As A Lawyer, Media Personnel & Writer

After Cenk Uygur received a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School he worked as an associate attorney at the law firms of Drinker Biddle & Reath in Washington, D.C. and Hayes & Liebman in New York. After which he went on to explore with different political parties before finally settling as a Democrat.

Aside from his pursuits as a lawyer, Uygur is also known for establishing a thriving media career which he started on a radio show. He worked with WWRC in Washington, D.C., and WRKO in Boston, Massachusetts before proceeding to write for, produce and appear on WAMI-TV news show. It is also known that in the early 2000s, Uygur maintained a weekly blog on The Huffington Post.

The lawyer turned media personality has also worked for MSNBC as a contributor and substitute anchor and then anchor. Cenk who has tried his hands on writing, has authored a book titled ‘Justice Is Coming – How Progressives Are Going To Take Over the Country and America Is Going to Love It’. The book is scheduled to be released on January 19, 2021.

The Young Turks Show Made Him Popular

On February 14th, 2002, Uygur launched a talk show The Young Turks on the Sirius Satellite Radio network. Their goal was to start a liberal-leaning political and entertainment show and it was co-hosted by Ana Kasparian. A couple of years later in 2015, they started a daily news video show on YouTube which has grown to become a successful global online organization with a huge number of subscribers. Uygur regularly states that The Young Turks is the largest online news show in the world as it has amassed over 8 billion views on YouTube and over 4.9 million subscribers.

Judging by the success of The Young Turks alone, Cenk Uygur is a wealthy man. However, he is incredibly discreet about the actual amount that he earns, but his net worth is no secret. He is estimated to be worth a whopping $5 million, but this is more of a speculation as it may be a lot more, nevertheless $5 million is quite a lot of money on any continent. It is also believed that he makes a lot from his online show, The Young Turks which has recorded massive views since its inception. With that alone and his stints with a handful of media houses, Uygur’s financial status seem pretty secure.

Cenk Uygur’s Roots Can Be Traced Down To Turkey

The media mogul was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on March 21, 1970. By the time he was 8 years old, his family up and moved to the United States of America and he spent the most part of his adolescence in East Brunswick, New Jersey. As is typical of people of Turkish descent, he was raised in a secular Muslim household. He had a brief period of devoutness during his early years but he is now agnostic.

Cenk Uygur got his high school diploma from East Brunswick High School and a management degree from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has lived quite the life while studying at the University of Pennsylvania where he got to play rugby with Greg Lippmann. However, he was sure to keep his interest in Turkish affairs alive despite his many interests in other things. Cenk was an active member of the Student Activities Council representing the Turkish Students Association.

Upon the successful completion of his education at the University of Pennsylvania, the aspiring lawyer went on to study at the Columbia Law School where he obtained a Juris Doctor. That degree landed him some work as an associate attorney at two law firms during his early career days.

The Young Turks Host Has A Blissful Marriage

Sometimes, having an active career can get in the way of family time. Cenk Uygur is one of the exceptions to this as he is still a devoted family man. He is married to a marriage and family therapist, Wendy Lang. This may be one of the reasons why they know how to navigate the minefield of career and family so expertly.

Though their relationship is quite advanced no information has been made available about how the pair met. Nevertheless, their union is blessed with two children, a boy, and a girl. Their son and first child, Prometheus Maximus, was born in the year 2010. Their daughter came shortly after, in 2012 and they named their daughter Joy Helena. The family continues to thrive.
