In 2016, Uygur eventually joined the Democratic party where he has remained to date. He is still very critical of the party’s politics and continues to call for a revitalization process in the US Democratic party. This made him co-found the Justice Democrats who seek to steer the Democratic Party towards the strongly progressive and social democratic as espoused by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. More so, in mid-November 2019, Uygur decided to run for Congress in California’s 25th district after Katie Hill resigned. He came out 4th out of 12 candidates with a 6.6% share of the vote.
