With it having been in the crux of the Kenyan banking sector for over fifty years, Co-operative Bank of Kenya needs no further introduction. The bank has been one of the leading banks in Kenya with a vast customer base. It has been a force to reckon with in the Kenyan financial sector and a key player in supporting the development and growth of SMEs and other existing large companies and enterprises in the country.
The bank has distinguished itself as a top-notch banking and financial service provider in Kenya, other neighboring East African countries, and internationally. In 2010, Co-operative Bank of Kenya was awarded and recognized as the best financial institution in Kenya by the Banker Magazine Awards of the Financial Times of London. A few years later, in 2013, it was awarded the Most Green Bank at the Energy Management Awards, to mention but a few.
How Co-operative Bank of Kenya Began
The Co-operative Bank of Kenya was established on January 10, 1968, and it has remained one of the most relevant banks contributing significantly to the entire growth of the Kenyan economy.
The banking giant started off with quite a paltry amount of capital base of Ksh 255,000 which was below the threshold of the minimum capital requirement approved by the Kenyan Banking Act; it was at the time placed at a whooping Ksh 2 million. Luckily for the bank, the Government waged into the situation by injecting an interest-free loan of Ksh 214,000 into the bank, to be paid in 10 years, which augmented the shortfalls in the initial capital base of the co-operative bank.
Notwithstanding, the government still granted the bank the privilege of exemption, by giving them a sufficient grace period to complete the aforesaid minimum capital requirement. Progressively, within the same year, the bank got its first Board of Directors with Mr. B. Kathanga and Hon C. W. Rubia, M P as Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively in addition to 7 board other members.
On December 16, 1977, the bank got registered as a Co-operative Financial Limited, giving it the license to operate as a financial institution before opening its doors to customers officially on March 8, 1993. Significantly, it was in 1994 that the Bank advanced into a full-fledged commercial bank offering all the financial services obtainable in a conventional commercial bank thereby leaving its old Co-operative status behind.
The bank recorded another significant milestone in 1998 after signing a contract with MoneyGram International, which made it the agent for the company’s international funds remittance business.
Moreover, the bank continues to grow in leaps and bound and by 2009, it witnessed an unprecedented customer-base growth from over 700,000 at the close of 2008 to a staggering 1.1 million at the close of 2009. This is in addition to establishing an additional 22 more branches, making their total branches to be as much as 74 branches, with a mention of the over 2.3 billion profit recorded by the bank in 2007.
Today, the bank has made so much progress and profit and they are showing no sign of slowing down. What’s more, the bank kept adding up to its litany of awards and recognitions year-in-year-out. Some of the most notable awards it got includes:
- 2019: Best Bank in Sustainable Finance in Kenya by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers Awards
- 2018: Best Investment Institution in Kenya by Banker Africa; Best bank in Kenya by EMEA African Banking Awards
- 2016: Best Commercial Bank, Kenya by Banker Africa; The Best Socially Responsible Bank in East Africa By Banker Africa
- 2015: The Financial Times Financial Inclusion Global Award; Bank of the Year for Financial Inclusion in The Bankers Awards run by the Financial Times of London
- 2014: Two MoneyGram awards
- 2011: Bank of the Year in Kenya by the Financial Times of London (the second year in a row as the bank also won the award in 2010); Best Company in Corporate Governance.
