From the early age of fifteen, Cody Garbrandt has been active on the fight scene receiving training and mentorship from his uncle Robert Meece who was an Olympic alternate in sports.
He attended Claymont High School, where he participated in wrestling matches and even won the State Championship in 2007. He was only a freshman at the time. More so, Garbrandt excelled in football and won All-State honors as a linebacker. In 2010, Garbrandt became a Senior National All-American. A feat many his age aspired to. However, boxing took the greater part of his interest. And so wrestling went out the window.

In the end, both Garbrandt and Cruz were awarded Fight of the Night for their performance.
