Born Cody Garrett Runnels in Marietta, Georgia, the U.S. on the 30th of June 1985, Cody’s father Dusty Rhodes was also a wrestler and was the one who taught young Cody the basics of wrestling before he was trained by Danny Davis, Al Snow, Ricky Morton, and Randy Orton.

He attended high school at Lassiter High School where he had a very successful amateur wrestling career. As a sophomore, he came out 6th in the (78kg) division and went ahead to win the Georgia state tournament in 2003 and 2004 at (86kg).
