The Irish-born actor has received multiple awards for his work since he launched his career back in 1997. The first role he played was a small one in the movie Drinking Crude. Although he started appearing in films in 1999, it was his appearances in Phone Booth (2003), S.W.A.T. (2003), and The Recruit (2003) that finally shoved him into the limelight.

Over two decades later, Colin Farrel has appeared in over fifty-five films and TV series and has been nominated for twenty-two awards, eight of which he won, including a Golden Globe Award for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture’.

Colin Farrell was born Colin James Farrell on the 31st of May, 1976, in Castleknock, Dublin, Ireland. His parents are father Eamon Farrell and mother Rita Farrell (née Monaghan). His father was a sportsman who played for the football club Shamrock Rovers FC before later becoming a businessman, operating a health food shop.

Farrell has three siblings. He and his older brother Eamon, Jr., and two sisters Claudine and Catherine were raised in Castleknock. Growing up, the young boy attended St. Brigid’s National School before proceeding to the exclusive all-boys private school, Castleknock College. He subsequently attended Gormanston College in County Meath.

Right from his school days, Colin Farrell has been nursing the ambition of delving into acting fulltime. The Kairos moment came when he saw Henry Thomas’ performance in Steven Spielberg‘s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Inspired by Thomas’ role in the movie, Farrell made up his mind to go the way of show biz and to never look back. Encouraged by his brother, he attended The Gaiety School of Acting where he only spent a limited time. He later dropped out as soon as he was cast as Danny Byrne on the BBC drama series Ballykissangel.

Colin Farrell got his start back in 1997 taking up roles in TV shows and films some of which include, Ballykissangel and Falling for a Dancer among others. His first lead role, however, only came three years later in the movie Tigerland which allowed him became an overnight sensation. His performance in the film earned him his first recorded award; the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards in 2000.

In the years that followed, Farrell’s career rise took a faster pace. At the turn of the millennium, he appeared as the outlaw Jesse James in American Outlaws (2001). Although American Outlaws performed way below expectations at the Box Office, the film further gave him a sort of mindshare among American viewers. The following year, the actor appeared in the 2002 film Hart’s War in which he starred alongside Bruce Willis. But while the project was also a Box Office disaster, Farrell’s appearance with Willis gave him a rare advantage not given to a relative newbie at the time.

2002 proved to be Colin Farrell’s breakthrough year as he was cast in Spielberg’s Minority Report. His role in the film earned him lots of positive reviews from viewers and critics alike. Next came the box office hit thriller film, Phone Booth; in which he appeared as Stu Shepard.

With a growing reputation in the industry, Colin Farrell was able to land numerous offers for different roles in 2003. He famously went on to star alongside the likes of Samuel Jackson in S.W.A.T and Ben Affleck in Daredevil. Other films he has since gone ahead to appear in include Dead Man Down (2013), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), Winter’s Tale (2014), Solace (2015), Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (2016), The Beguiled (2017), Widows (2018). He has further added voice actor to his list of titles as he voiced characters in animations like Epic (2013) and Dumbo (2019).
