In the NBA world, only a few Nigerians are found among the professional basketballers, one of them is David Nwaba. He is a Nigerian-American basketballer who has shown exceptional qualities during his few seasons in the big league. David was not selected by any franchise during the NBA draft but has played for quite a number of teams linked to the NBA, he started off professionally in 2016 and since then, he has been one of the pivot stars in b-ball.

David was born as David. U Nwaba on January 14, 1993, in Los Angeles. A Nigerian by origin and an American by birth. His ethnicity can be traced to the great Igbo tribe of Nigeria. His days at the University High School were notable because of his contributions to the basketball team. While there, he was listed as the Western League Most Valuable Player honoree twice and he also made an All-League First team Selection.

- College Career
As a senior, he completed the year, averaging 22.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Afterwards, he joined the league of basketballers at Hawaii Pacific, where he started his collegiate career. David Nwaba’s experience in the court couldn’t match with the school team, so he was taken off the court for a year (2011-2012) in order to develop his skills.
As time went on, he completed his training but left for Santa Monica College. On getting to Santa, he started his games in high spirits and was named the Western State Conference South Division player of the Year. With his growth level in the game, he was named to the All-California Community College Athletic Association state after he averaged 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game just within the short pace he joined the school team.
The basketballer performed excellently with the Santa’s team, however, he left and moved to Cal Poly where he also joined the school team. As a second-year student-athlete, David played in all 34 games, starting 30. He completed the year at the eighth position in the Big West Conference Players and 59th in the NCAA Division I players, helping his team lead with a 52.6 percent field goal mark.
That same year, David Nwaba finished as the second lineup, scoring 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, in addition to 21 blocks. At the end of his collegiate career at Cal Poly, he was the 15th in the program history in rebounds, totalling 465 rebounds with more than 1,000 career points scored.
- Professional Career
Subsequently, David Nwaba joined the Reno Bighorns of the NBA who later traded him to the D-Fenders. He played skillfully but briefly with the D-Fenders and later signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in the month of February 2017. The following month, he renewed his contract and made his start in a game against the Philadephia 76ers, scoring 6 points.
With his accuracy in the court, the Lakers were glad that they made a deal with the basketballer and later signed a multi-year contract with him, nevertheless, he also played for the D-Fenders despite being with the Lakers. A few months into the deal, the Lakers waived him and he was later claimed by the Chicago Bulls. He played for the Bulls shortly and moved on to join the Cleveland Cavaliers in a one year contract worth $1.5 million in September 2018.
Apart from the game of basketball, David Nwaba also showed his talent as a footballer and in the game of volleyball. He was even lettered in both games.
David Nwaba is a proud Nigerian, born to Theodore and Blessing Nwaba. He is one of five siblings. the b-baller has two brothers, Victor Nwaba and Alex Nwaba and 3 sisters named Jane, Precious, and Barbara.
Apart from David who made a career in sports, his sister, Barbara, plays heptathlon professionally. She was the winner of the National Championship for two years, 2015 and 2016 respectively and also competed in the 2016 Olympics heptathlon games. Barbara attended University High School and sees herself as a future accountant.
