The former NBA player enrolled at the Fort Defiance High School, Fort Defiance, Virginia where he played and clinched both basketball and baseball state championships.

During that time, he frequently used the barn of his coach to train, which helped him to enhance his shooting skills. He opted to further his studies by joining Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia after being picked by the Texas Rangers in the 1982 Major League Baseball draft. In college, he participated with his team in the 1983 and 1984 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) where they finished as the second runner-up in the 1984 edition.

Though they made it to the 1985 and 1986 NCAA tournaments, they didn’t advance beyond first round on both occasions. Despite being picked in the 14th round of the 1985 Major League Basketball draft by the Baltimore Orioles, Dell Curry continued to play basketball for Virginia Tech. He later became Virginia Tech all-time leader in steals with his 295 points and second all-time leader with 2,389 and was made a fellow of Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Following his selection in the 15th round of 1986 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz, Dell Curry went on to play for other NBA teams including Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Hornets, and Milwaukee Bucks before retiring in 2002.
