Derek Carr was born Derek Dallas Carr on 28th March 1991 in Fresno, Bakersfield, California. He is a citizen of the United States from the white ethnicity. He attended Bakersfield Christian High School upon his return to Bakersfield in his senior year with his family, he had relocated to Sugar Land alongside his family in his early years.

He started his football career when he played for Clements High School in Texas, he spent three promising seasons there before moving to Bakersfield Christian High School in California where he continued playing.

His college career was spent with the Fresno State Bulldogs where he left remarkable records. His older brother David Carr is also an NFL quarterback who played at Fresno State.

Carr was recognized for his contributions in the game of football by CFPA Elite QB in the 2013 Award ceremony which he won over other contenders. This is for his sound performance in the course of his three seasons spell at Fresno State.
