Find out more about him below especially how he was able to get through his troubled childhood.

Early Life

Derrius Guice had a difficult childhood but he turned to football to find a little respite. He was born in a poverty-stricken side of town in Baton Rouge on the 21st of June 1997. He lost his father on the 3rd of May 2003. The loss of his father drove the little kid further into football, as he focused his energy into the game to escape the pain of his loss.

All his hard work paid off as Guice earned a scholarship to attend a school called Catholic High. The scholarship may have been a blessing but Guice wasn’t having a good time at Catholic High – he and his friends were getting subjected to racism in the school which was predominantly white.

In difficult times, sometimes all we need is a steady hand to guide us and make us feel safe. For Guice, that hand was Stephanie de la Houssaye’s. Houssaye’s who served as the guidance and counselor at Catholic High had a similar childhood, she took Guice and mentored him. Their relationship started after another gang altercation at Guice’s residence left him unconscious. The relationship withstood threats from authorities and students alike and at the end, it helped Derrius Guice rise above his background.

The relationship combined with a determination of using football as his way out of poverty helped Guice deliver impressive performances in his senior year. He played in the U.S Army All American bowl, earning the Pete Dawkins Trophy for his solid performance in the tourney.

Following that he was rated by Rivals.com as a five-star recruit and second-best high school running back. Guice, therefore, got quite some offers from some college programs from which he opted for Louisiana State University to fulfil a promise he made to his father before his untimely death.

Guice’s performances for LSU was a continuation of the drive that earned him a scholarship and made him a five-star recruit. Even though he mostly spent his first year at LSU as a backup player, he played all 12 games. He started his first game in his sophomore season after Leonard Fournette, the first choice running back had an injury.

Before declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft, Guice ended his college carer with a record of 3074 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns.
