Andre Romelle Young chose the name Dr Dre ever since he began his music career way back in the early 80’s. He was born as the first child to Theodore and Verna Young on February 18, 1965, in Compton California. His dad, Theodore was a singer and a member of an R&B singing group. Trouble began in paradise for Dre when his mom and dad separated in 1972.
Upon his parent’s separation, he lived with his grandmother who raised him and groomed him to be a better person. His mom later found love with Curtis Crayon and had three children with him but unfortunately, she lost two of them to the hands of death. Like her former marriage, the days she spent with Curtis were also numbered as they soon divorced leading to her third marriage to Warren Griffin. With Warren, she had three daughters and one son. In total, Dr Dre has four half-sisters and one half-brother all from his mother’s marriages.
Dre’s parent’s divorce got a big hold on him as he became a troubled, violent and stubborn child. For his education, he started at Vanguard Junior High School, however, he couldn’t live by the school rules and later transferred to Roosevelt Junior High School but didn’t graduate from there either. Dre subsequently enrolled at Centennial High School where during his days at Centennial High, he recorded poor grades and wasn’t meeting up with the school’s minimum academic requirements so he moved to Fremont High School but still wasn’t doing any better there. Often times he was regular in his various school’s detention offices and was also grounded on different occasions. He tried joining the Northrop Aviation Company but his poor grades made him ineligible.
It was at this point that Dr Dre discovered that if he failed in all things, he wouldn’t fail in his social life because he had recorded a number of wins with the art department of his school. Then, he decided to give building his social life a shot and poured his pain into carving out a career in music.
