Drake runs the mic like its a plaything and has been regarded by various entertainment platforms as one of the best rappers of the millennium. Drake defied segregation to become one of the most recognized Canadian rappers in the United States. The Hotline Bling crooner has garnered tons of awards including the Grammys in the course of his outstanding career.
He is not just a musician, he has featured in notable movies which also contributed to his fast fame. Drake played the role of wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks in Degrassi: The Next Generation. The seven-year-long role formed a strong base for his popularity as he soon ventured fully into rapping afterward.
Drake’s Real Name, Mom, Dad
Drake whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Canada. He grew up with his Jewish mother Sandi Graham in Forest Hill, a Jewish neighborhood after his parents got divorced when he was just five.
Though his father was Catholic, Aubrey who attended Jewish day school was taught the precepts and doctrine of the Jews by his mother. However, adapting at the all-white school was very difficult for the African-American Canadian. Music was more or less an inherited trait for Drake whose father Dennis Graham was a drummer in a rock n roll band, and whose mother hailed from a musical family.
Acting and Music Career
Aubrey started writing songs at a very young age of 10. However, he tested the waters in acting before he went into music. His first stint in acting was in 2001 when he got a role on the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. This was after he made an audition by an agent dad of his classmate. Following his outstanding performance in the series, he was widely recognized and rose to a celebrity status in Canada. It also earned him some awards like ‘Young Artist Award’ in 2002 for ‘Best Ensemble in a TV Series’.
Drake made his debut in music in 2006 with his first mixtape Room for Improvement which was followed by another mixtape Comeback Season in 2007. Impressed by his version of Man of the Year rapper Lil Wayne soon made Drake a part of his team and the up and coming rapper joined his Carter III tour. Drake’s third mixtape ‘So Far Gone’ then followed in 2009 and had some of the popular singles ‘Best I Ever Had’ and ‘Successful’ which featured Lil Wayne and Trey Songz. The former was a hit which took the US by storm, making its way to No 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, while the latter went gold and was part of Rolling Stone’s “25 Best Songs of 2009”.
After joining Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, the Best I Ever Had singer released his first studio album Thank Me Later, in June 2010. The album went platinum and topped international charts. The following year, Drake dished his second studio album Take Care which earned him a well deserving Grammy award. He was soaring; In 2013, Drake released Nothing Was the Same, his third studio album from his own record label ‘OVO Sound’. His Grammy Award-winning single hotline bling was one of the five tracks included in his fourth studio album ‘Views’ released in April 2016.
His Girlfriend, Baby Mama, Son
Drake’s interesting but incongruous personal life has continuously been discussed on various online media platforms. Why do we view it so? Drake has been in a series of on and off relationships with different stars and has been in a series of relationship feuds and conflicts that the media has lost count of his relationship endeavours. He booms with the ladies just as he booms in his music.
Between 2016 and 2017 he was in a very short-spanned relationship with pop singer Jennifer Lopez. Also in 2016, he was said to have dated Instagram Star and model, India Love Westbrooks whose sister Crystal Westbrooks he also got entangled with later on.
It may have been a second chance for either of the two, but Drake and pop singer Rihanna who had dated in 2009 were caught in another relationship that never lasted. Drake was also rumored to be in a relationship with Raye, a British musician in 2018. Although he is rumored to be dating model Malika Terry, sources have suggested that former porn star Sophie Brussaux is the mystery mother of Drake’s son.
But its no longer a mystery as a paternity test confirmed that Drake fathers a son, Adonis, born by Sophie. This was after the two served the media with some hot baby mama drama. However, the musician has taken full responsibility for his son’s well being as well as that of his mother.
Before 2016, Drake dated several women who made appearances in his music videos. This included Catya Washington, a reality TV star, whom he broke up with after a one year romance. In 2010 he also dated Maliah Michel of his ‘Find Your Love’ music video. Drake also dated US tennis player Serena Williams. Though the relationship was never confirmed, they broke up in 2015.
