Ellen Chiweshe: The First Southern African Woman To Be An Air Commodore

Ellen Chiweshe is a Zimbabwean Air Force officer, a group commander who was recently promoted to the 3rd highest rank in the force on 5th January 2016. The African amazon has been breaking records all the way as she previously served as one of the first few females to work in the finance department of the force.

In 2013, Zimbabwe amended its constitution to accommodate gender equality and fairness in the labor market. However, it is still a milestone to attain high positions as a female especially in a male dominated field as she also concurs with these words:

“It was a man’s world and it was difficult to break in.”

Ellen is now in the league of women who stand out in Zimbabwe, such personalities as Joice Mujuru who made it to the top as the first female Vice President and Chipo Matimba, one of the 6 female pilots in the country- serving with the Zimbabwean military aviation. Ellen has done incredibly well for herself and has become a model and a source of encouragement for the growing generation.
