It may have been about a decade since Freema Agyeman last appeared on the popular science fiction TV series, Doctor Who, but her name continues to resonate with fans of the show. This is because of the enormous impact that the talented English actress brought to bear during her time as the famous doctor’s sultry sidekick.
That impact saw her write her name in gold during three seasons, 2006 – 2010, and since then, fans have been clamouring for her to reprise the iconic role. That wish has been granted but that does not mean that Agyeman’s career has been solely limited to the popular sci-fi series. The actress has also made her mark on other projects, both in the UK and US.
Freema Agyeman Originally Aspired To Be A Doctor
Freema Agyeman was born on March 20, 1979, in London and attended a Catholic school – Our Lady’s Convent RC High School. Her mother, Azar, was Iranian while her father, Osei, was Ghanian. The actress also had a younger brother, Dominic, and an older sister named Leila, and they all grew up on Woodberry Down Council Estate in Hackney East London. They didn’t have much in the way of material possessions but still had a safe and happy upbringing.
Whilst growing up, Freema initially wanted to be a doctor but as time went by, she discovered that she didn’t have the discipline to put in the long hours of study required. The young lady also discovered that she was more inclined to the performing arts and during the summer of 1996, enrolled in the Anna Scher Theatre School to hone her skills in acting. She then proceeded to Middlesex University where she studied performing arts and drama, graduating in 2000.
She Started Her Acting Career As A Soap Star
Freema commenced her career with bit parts in several schools and community productions. She subsequently moved on to the small screen and landed a major role as Lola Wise in the British soap opera, Crossroads. Crossroads revolved around two feuding sisters, one wealthy and one poor, and Agyeman portrayed the role of a promiscuous trainee chef whose idea of happiness is loads of men, attention, and fame. For her role in Crossroads, she got two nominations in the British Soap Awards for ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Sexiest Female’ in 2003.
Freema Agyeman Auditioned For Three Different Parts On Doctor Who
Agyeman owes her career breakthrough to Doctor Who but her journey to the series was not an easy one. The London-born actress auditioned for about three roles in the series, namely Sally Jones, Esme, and Adeola Oshodi, but lost out on the first two. She, however, landed the third, a technician in the secret spy organization, Torchwood, and featured in just one episode of the 2006 season of Doctor Who.
Agyeman utilized this chance to give such an excellent performance and the showrunners asked her to audition for the role of the doctor’s sidekick in the next season. Agyeman massively impressed during the screen tests and subsequently landed the role of the doctor’s sidekick, Martha Jones, in the 2007 season of Doctor Who.
The Londoner spent three years as Martha during which she and the doctor embarked on several famous adventures, conquering villains from one era to the next. Her character also developed some sort of crush on her boss but nothing came out of that. Freema’s time on Doctor Who made her a household name in her native England. It also fetched her some award nods including nominations for Best Actress in the National Television Awards and for Best Actress at the TV Quick Awards.

Her Stint On American TV Series
Following her successful stint on Doctor Who, Freema Agyeman has gone on to appear in other British series such as Law & Order: Uk, The Carrie Diaries, and Old Jack’s Boat. She has also made waves across the pond, appearing on American shows such as Sense8 and New Amsterdam. Sense8 is a Netflix sci-fi series about eight strangers from around the globe who discover that they are emotionally and mentally connected.
They embark on a quest to uncover the truth about their origin whilst dodging a nefarious organization hell-bent on eliminating them. Sense8 featured an international ensemble cast, including the likes of Agyeman, and was quite popular with the viewing public during its run, from 2015 to 2018. Following its conclusion, Freema revealed that she was quite proud of the show and has learned so much in the course of it.
Frema Agyeman Was Once Rumored To Be Engaged
An actress as beautiful and talented as Frema surely has some stories written down in her love diary. But then, Lady Agyeman is notoriously private with her personal life and spares no information for the media and the public. This did not stop the inquisitive media from digging deeper into the personal life of the actress.
It was once said that Agyeman was getting married, but it all ended as rumours as there were no reports of a wedding or an engagement to substantiate the stories. These rumours emerged when the actress was dating her former boyfriend James, a real estate agent. The couple lived together in North London and reportedly started dating in 2007 before Agyeman’s rise to stardom. They later went their separate ways after so many years together as lovers.
She Dated Fellow Actor, Luke Roberts
After ending things with her long-time boyfriend, Agyeman started a relationship with actor Luke Roberts. Luke is a native of Suffolk, England, and was born in October 1977. He commenced his career in the early 2000s and has featured in several movies and TV series, including Game of Thrones, Mile High, Ransom, Holby City, and Black Sails.
Agyeman and Roberts initiated their relationship in the 2010s but it cannot be ascertained if they are still together now. The last time they were seen together was in 2015 when the actress Instagrammed a picture of herself in Spain where her beau was filming for Game of Thrones. Since then, not much has been heard from the pair but it is possible that they are still a couple and are only keeping things on the low.
