Gary Oldman’s life before fame
The London-born actor’s birthdate is the 21st of March 1958. He is the son of Kathleen and Leonard Bertram Oldman. Gary and his two sisters had a rough childhood as their father Leonard, a former sailor and welder was an alcoholic who deserted his family when the actor was only seven. Oldman grew up in South London and attended West Greenwich School in Deptford. But he dropped out of school at age 16, when it became increasingly difficult for his family to make ends meet. In order to support himself, Gary had to take up several menial jobs such as working as a sales clerk in a sports shop, a worker in assembly lines, and a porter in an operating theater. In his early acting years, Gary also supported himself by selling shoes and beheading pigs.
Growing up, Oldman had a flair for the performing arts. As a child, he was a singer and a pianist but was inspired to pursue a career in acting after watching Malcolm McDowell in the 1971 movie The Raging Moon. It was while working at the sports shop that Oldman enrolled at the Greenwich Young People’s Theatre. To further hone his acting skills, Gary proceeded to the Rose Buford College of Speech and Drama on a scholarship and graduated with a degree in Acting in the year 1979.
