Ghana Movie Awards
Creating a platform like this simply means appreciating good works, motivating and inspiring others to do better. Ghana’s pace-setter movie award platform established by the country’s movie industry is indeed a renowned leading event. The Ghana Movie Awards which was established in 2009 was designed to celebrate the Ghanaian art. Movie producers, actors, actresses, off-camera crew and other stakeholders across the country gather once in a year under this platform to celebrate great achievements in movies.
Ghana Movie Awards which was originally owned by Phred Nuamah was sold as a franchise to Zylofon Media in 2017. Following the transaction, the company reportedly gained rights to host and organize the event for 10 years. Zylofon in 2017, announced its newly acquired rights following the unveiling of five actors James Gardiner, Toosweet Annan, Bibi Bright, Zynnell Zuh and Benedicta Gafah, who were newly signed under its management.
From the Ghana Movie Awards, another platform, Ghana TV Series Awards was formed. This one has the purpose of appreciating good works in the category of TV series.
Ghana Movie Icons
Ghana Movie Awards platform comprises various categories formed to accommodate different movie genres. For the nominees and winners, some names have become household to organizers of the grand event. Names like Leila Djansi and many others are popular names that Ghanaians look up to in the movie industry.
Leila Djansi, a reputable movie icon is a US-based Ghanaian filmmaker whose outstanding works have earned a significant stake in the industry both home and abroad.
Another name that cannot be overlooked is Ivan Quashigah, an A-list director and the one who piloted the popular TV series ‘Yolo’. Quashigah who bagged the award for Best Directing Tv Series in the 2016 Ghana Movie Awards has been described by many stakeholders as a legend in the movie industry, because of his unparalleled works and quite significant contributions. Quashigah is not only a director, he owns his own movie production house, FarmHouse Production which is where many Ghanaian hit movies are made.
Shirley Frimpong Manso is also a household name in the Ghana movie industry. Shirley is a renowned writer who alongside other big shot colleagues have succeeded in putting Ghana on the map. Manso made Ghana proud when she won ‘Best Director’ at the 6th Africa Movie Academy Awards. She also owns a film production house – Sparrow Production – which is also into advertising.
All thanks to the Ghana Movie Awards, these aforementioned personalities; and many others working tirelessly to project Ghana to the world through their crafts, are duly appreciated for their efforts.
