Grant Gustin is an actor and a vocalist who achieved his breakthrough following his portrayal of Sebastian Smythe in the American musical comedy-drama television series, Glee. While his role on the show introduced him to television fans, it was the CW show, The Flash, that made him an international star.
The Flash coincided with the shift in public reception of superhero films and television, and along with it, Grant became a household name. The show, which has been on air since 2014, has aired more than 130 episodes, and become one of the longest-running superhero shows of all time.
A Back-Door Launch of The Flash Put Grant Gustin Front and Center of Superhero Television
Grant Gustin will be the first to admit that he had little experience going into The Flash. Despite his breakthrough role in Glee as Sebastian Smythe, he had little experience on television, talk less of helming an entire show as a lead character. Still, he was able to beat other candidates like Andy Mientus during the audition process.
As The Flash, he made his debut appearance in Arrow, the first show in the Arrowverse, playing Barry Allen, an assistant police forensic investigator who worked in the fictional city, Central City.
He gained superhuman speed after he was struck by lightning in his laboratory and subsequently decided to fight crime with his newfound powers. Since debuting on October 7, 2014, the show has documented his battle with criminals and arch enemies, and the struggles of his personal life, especially the effect of his superhero duties.
Since its creation, the character has remained one of the most popular heroes in comic history, and Grant Gustin’s TV version enjoyed similar reception. The Flash’s pilot episode became the second-most watched premiere in CW history and the first season averaged over 4.6 million viewers per episode.
It maintained its popularity for the next three seasons, averaging more than three million viewers per episode. The Flash also holds the Guinness World Records for the Most in-demand superhero TV show and Most in-demand Action and Adventure TV Show. It has also been ranked among the 40 Best Science Fiction TV Shows of All Time by Rolling Stone.
The show’s popularity transformed Grant into one of the most recognizable faces on television, making him a bonafide celebrity. Not only did the show’s popularity earn him widespread fame, but it also brought him plenty of critical accolades.
The Flash Has Earned Him Over 20 Award Nominations
While diminishing returns might be setting in on the show in recent years, Grant Gustin has remained a favourite of award organizations and fan groups. His performance as The Flash/Barry Allen has been so well-received that there were petitions for him to reprise the role on the big screen in DC’s Extended Universe.
Although that role ultimately went to Ezra Miller, Grant’s portrayal has received multiple award recognitions. He has received five nominations from Saturn Award, winning one of them for Breakthrough Performance. He also has three nominations from IGN Summer Movie Awards for Best TV Hero, with two wins.
The MTV Movie + TV Awards have also recognized him with two nominations for Best Hero. Grant Gustin is also a regular nominee at fan awards like Kids’ Choice Awards and Teen Choice Awards. He has four nominations as Favourite Male TV Star from the former and over 11 from the latter in various categories.
Grant Gustin Has Also Made a Lot of Money from the Show
Yes, it brought him fame. Yes, it brought him plenty of critical recognition. But in a world ruled by money, financial success is equally as important, and The Flash has given Grant Gustin plenty of it. Far from his standing before he heard the words ‘Run Barry, Run’, the Norfolk, Virginia-born actor now has a net worth of $5 million.
His multimillionaire status has come from earning an estimated $100,000 per episode, which, going by the show’s 23 episodes per season format, brings his salary earnings to $2.3 million per season. Although the exact season he began earning the amount remains unknown, he has been on the contract since at least 2018.
With the actor in talks to extend his time on the show with two additional seasons, one that might come with a pay bump, there is no doubt that the CW show has made him a rich man.
The Scarlett Speedster is also an Accomplished Singer with a Decent Discography
Having gotten his career started on stage in the musical, West Side Story, Grant Gustin has always been quite the singer. It is what got him his role on Glee as Sebastian Smythe, and inadvertently, launched his side career as a professional singer.
Although he is no songwriter with a professional music career, Grant Gustin has developed an impressive discography performing songs on Glee and The Flash. In the limited appearances he had on Glee, he recorded seven songs. The first, Uptown Girl, was released in 2011 as part of the show’s soundtrack, Glee: The Music, Volume 7.
The song peaked at #68 on the US Billboard Chart. It also charted in the top 200 in the UK and Canada music charts. Five of his recorded songs made it to the Glee: The Music, The Complete Season Three album the following year. Tracks like Smooth Criminal and Glad You Came charted on the US Billboard 100.
When he began appearing on The Flash, he lent his singing talent to the musical crossover, Duet, the seventeenth episode of the third season. Songs from the episode featured in the soundtrack album, The Flash – Music from the Special Episode: Duet.
Two of his songs, Super Friend featuring Supergirl actress, Melissa Benoist, and Runnin’ Home to You, made the cut. Neither of them charted on any major music chart, however. Overall, Grant Gustin’s discography has eight songs from four albums.
Grant Gustin is Married to a Physical Therapist
On The Flash, Grant Gustin’s character has a lasting love story with Iris West, a journalist. In real life, however, the actor is locked in happily ever after with a physical therapist, Dr. Andrea La Thoma. We are not sure of the exact circumstances that led to their relationship, but it began in early 2016.
Within a year of being a couple, he proposed to her on a beach in April 2017. According to him, it was not the most elegant proposal, resulting in unexpected laughter from Andrea who taught he was joking. Still, she said yes, and the couple walked the aisle a year after.
They had two wedding ceremonies, the first of which was held in Sabah, Malaysia. The ceremony, while traditionally binding according to Andrea’s culture, was not legally binding. They later held the western and legal wedding at The Valentine in downtown Los Angeles on December 15, 2018. Both ceremonies had family and friends, including his The Flash co-stars, in attendance.
His Wife is a Native of the Island of Borneo
Andrea La Thoma was born on July 11, 1988, in Ohio to parents, James, and Judy Thoma. Her mother is a Kadazan and a native of the Island of Borneo. She grew up alongside three siblings, Louise, Christian, and Jonathan, and is fluent in her mother’s tongue.
While her husband is a TV star, she is a physical therapist, whose relationship with fitness began in high school. She was a star on her school’s soccer team and competed in track and field events. Post-high school, she studied Exercise Physiology at Kent State University.
During and after completing her degree, Grant Gustin’s wife worked as a physical therapist, and after graduation, pursued her doctorate at Old Dominion University. She continued her work as a therapist in Sunnyvale, California, and also has a YouTube channel where she posts workout videos and advice.
