Harumi Maekawa met Shinsuke Nakamura for the first time at Aoyama Gakuin University. At the time, Shinsuke was a wrestler on the university team, as well as a two-time champion at the time. Despite the busy schedule, this meant Nakamura would have to adapt, Harumi nevertheless stayed by his side and supported him. Nakamura was poised to win the tournament after being nicknamed Super Rookie, and he almost did. In the semi-finals match against Yuji Nagata, Nakamura dislocated his shoulder.
