On Thursday, 7th January 2016, African football dignitaries gathered in Abuja to celebrate the annual Glo Confederation of African Footballers (CAF) awards. The event saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang emerge as the African player of the year. Pierre has been a real hard worker in the past year, and it was not surprising that he should be a winner. All you need to know about him is contained below:
Bio, Life and Family
Aubameyang was born to a Gabonese father and a Spanish mother on June 18, 1989, in France. The man who would grow up to be the best player on the African continent was born in France even though it was in Spain that he was raised.
It was not surprising that the man decided to choose football above any other thing because he was raised in a family that was into sports, as his father was also a footballer in his youthful days. Apart from that, after football, he continues to serve as a talent scout for AC Milan. More so, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also has two other brothers who are also footballers.
Girlfriend, Relationship, and Children
Very close to his own family, most especially his father and mother, Pierre-Emerick has likewise started his own family even though he is yet to be married. The man has been with his girlfriend, Alysha Behague, in a rather very long relationship that began more than 8 years ago.
Alysha was born on August 20, 1986, and she is French. The two of them have two sons together, Curtys who was born in 2011 and Pierre who was born in 2016.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Career
He currently plays for the Gabon national team. Prior to this, he played for France’s U-21 team and Gabon’s U-23 team. Like his father once was, he is the current captain of the team. He scored Gabon’s first-ever and only goal during the football tournament at the London Olympics of 2012. He is also Gabon’s highest scorer with 19 goals to his credit.
It was in 2007 that Aubemeyang got to begin his professional career when he joined AC Milan and played for its youth team. Soon enough, he made a name for himself as a striker to watch out for. He moved to Dijon on loan in 2008 and he again performed very well even though he was only 18 at the time. From here, he continued to Lille in 2009. He would move on to play for other Monaco and Saint-Étienne before finally settling with Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
He signed a five-year deal with Dortmund that would keep him in the club until 2018 and make him the first Gabonese player to play in the Bundesliga. Immediately he made a name for himself when he scored a hat-trick on his debut game, making him the first person to achieve such in the clubs history. He ended the season scoring 16 goals in all competitions. The next season was even better as he ended with 25 goals from 46 appearances.
At the start of the 2015/6 season, he signed a new contract that would keep him with the club until 2020. The season was another successful one for him as he became the first player in the league to score 8 goals in the first 8 games of a season. The person that scored most before he came was 5 goals in first 5 games. The season ended him with scoring 37 goals in all competitions but lost the Bundesliga top scorer to Robert Lewandowski. Nevertheless, he compensated for this the next season when he scored 31 goals to end as the top scorer and also move above 100 club goals.
Pierre was sought after by English team, Arsenal for a bid of £44.6million which he turned down. According to him,
“I don’t want to go to Arsenal. I won’t leave Dortmund soon”.
Nevertheless, he later ended up moving to the club in January of 2018 on a reported transfer fee totalling £60 million, thereby setting a club record fee with the transfer. On his first game for Arsenal, the prolific striker scored a goal in the club’s 5-1 thrashing of Everton.
Having won the CAF player of the year trophy, he was deemed undeserving by a fellow nominee and 4-time consecutive winner of the award, Yaya Toure who implicitly stated that Aubameyang’s win brings shame to Africa.
