Congolese Soukous King, Koffi Olomide, Nominated For International Reggae and World Music Awards

It’s about time for the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRWMA) and the 2016 list of nominees have arrived. The International Reggae and World Music Awards will take place on 2 October at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts in Florida, United States.

For an award that was established in 1982, and aims to acknowledge and honor “the accomplishments and contributions of reggae and world music artists, inclusive of songwriters, performers, promoters and musicians”, the International Reggae and World Music Awards is pretty old and prestigious.

International Reggae and World Music Awards

This year’s nominees list saw some African acts showing up including Nigeria’s Flavour and Wizkid, Ghana’s Shatta Wale and Congo’s Koffi Olomide. In one category, Flavour’s ‘Ololufe’ featuring Chidinma faces competition from Wizkid’s ‘Final (Baba Nla)’, Shatta Wale’s ‘Chop Kiss’ , Koffi Olomide’s ‘Selfie’ and Maitre Gims’s ‘Sape Comme Jamais’.

Shatta Wale’s ‘Chop Kiss’ faces competition from global pop heavyweights Sia and Sean Paul’s ‘Cheap Thrills’ and Major Lazer in the Best Music Video category.

Congolese soukous king, Koffi Olomide, is a strong contender in the Best Soukous Song/Entertainer category with his ‘Selfie’. Songs from Fabregas, Celeo Scram and others make up the list.

Wizkid’s record-breaking collaboration with Drake, ‘One Dance’, is up for the Most Popular R&B, Hip Hop Song/Entertainer award. Beyonce, Rihanna, and Kendrick Lamar are also nominated in the category.
