Irene is the leader of the South Korean girl band Red Velvet who has gained popularity both locally and globally following the launch of her solo career in 2015. Beyond her ability to sing, the Daegu native also has a knack for rapping and modeling.

Irene was first revealed as a member of the quintet girl group in 2014 by SM Entertainment. Bae Joo-hyun, who is known professionally as Irene, was born in Daegu, South Korea on 29th March 1991. Her professional name is said to have its roots from Greek mythology as it reportedly means goddess of peace. She has one sibling; a younger sister whose name is unknown.

Irene is an alumna of Haknan High School. In 2009, she became a trainee of South Korea’s largest entertainment company, SM Entertainment. She was later promoted to the talent agency’s pre-debut training team called SM Rookies created in 2013. The young aspiring singer underwent five years of training before she debuted as the original quartet line up of Red Velvet in 2014. Since their debut, the group has dropped two studio albums, one reissue album, and nine extended plays, a number of which have topped the Gaon Album Chart.

Since launching her individual career in 2015, the singer has served as the host of several TV shows. From 2015 to 2016, she co-hosted the South Korean music program, Music Bank which airs on KBS2 along with Park Bo-gum. She followed it up by hosting twelve episodes of a fashion show called Laundry Day on OnStyle Network.

In 2017, the Red Velvet member returned as the co-host of Music Bank World Tour: Singapore and Music Bank World Tour: Jakarta. Other TV shows she has co-hosted include Korean Popular Culture & Arts Awards, KBS Song Festival and SBS Super Concert in Taipei.

She Has a Flourishing Acting Career

The multi-talented singer who is known for her singing prowess has gone ahead to show off her acting skills in some TV series and movies. In 2015, she was featured in the documentary movie of SM Town titled, SM Town: The Stage. Irene was once rumored to be dating actor Park Bo-gum while they both co-hosted Music Bank. The chemistry between the two garnered attention and sparked the dating rumor as they were rated as one of the show’s best partnership in history. But as there was no substantial report to back up the rumor, it was taken to be false. Since that time, nothing much has been learned about her love life.

Although Irene is yet to release her own songs or mini-albums, she has made appearances in multiple music videos. In November 2014, she appeared in the video for ‘At Gwanghwamun’ by Kyuhyun, a Korean singer, and TV host.
