It’s world book day in the United Kingdom, and it’s only right to remind our users, both readers and non-readers of the benefits of reading. Reading of course is not limited to story books or school textbooks. Reading can be done for leisure or to gain new knowledge. Regardless of your reason for reading, there’s always a catch to it.
1. IT’S A BRAIN EXERCISE
Just like working out is good for strengthening the body, so is reading. Reading is a fun way to develop the mind, it reduces the risk of having declining mental health. Bottom line is, reading keeps your mind from snoozing and eventually blacking out.
2. YOU GET TO EXPERIENCE A DIFFERENT WORLD
Bibliophiles — people who love to read can testify that there are sometimes they become so immersed in the plot of a book they are reading, that when they are done it feels so strange to go on with their usual life. Reading does that. You get to experience different traditions, worlds, in your mind, I like to refer to books as cognitive visas.

3. YOU LEARN NEW WORDS
Although grammar classes are good you don’t have to attend them to improve your vocabulary. Having to use the same words or phrases to express your feelings and/or thoughts over again can be come really redundant. Reading gets you accustomed to new words, phrases and expressions.
4. IT INCREASES YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Reading makes you learn a lot of things. By getting immersed in a writer’s experiences, you see a different angle to a topic you’re well accustomed to, it might make you empathetic, it might not but it sure does increase your knowledge of said topic.
5. IT IMPROVES YOUR CONVERSATIONS
This is as a result of your increase in knowledge. When you know more about different topics, even if they are just the basics it makes you more likely to have more fun/intelligent conversations that are not limited to weather talks or the latest movie in the cinema.
So what are you waiting for ? Test my points by reading a book everyday. You don’t have to read non-fiction because everyone you know is doing that, start by picking a genre that makes you comfortable, and there you go!
Happy World Book Day!
