J-Hope found his love for dance very early in life and began to train in the Gwangju Music Academy. He was also a member of the underground dance team named Neuron. Moreover, he attained some form of celebrity status for his dancing, winning several local prizes and also coming first at a national dance competition in 2008. J-Hope soon began to incorporate singing into his act which enabled his audition to enter the stage as an idol trainee.

In addition to being in the group, J-hope began his solo career on the 1st of March 2018 with the release of Hope World, his first solo mixtape. The mixtape made its debut on #63 on the Billboard 200 and peaking at #38. This feat made him the highest-charting Korean solo act up to that time on the chart. Three of his mixtape tracks; “Daydream”, “Hope World” and “Hangsang” made it to the World Digital Songs Chart at numbers 3, 16 and 24, respectively. The songs rose to numbers 1, 6, and 11 the following week which made J-Hope one of the 10 Korean groups or individual to reach number 1 on the chart.

With the success of his solo debut, he ranked number three on the list of Emerging Artist Chart and 97 on the Artist 100 chart before moving to number 91 the following week. The mixtape was on the chart of ten countries worldwide. In 2019, he released a collaboration single titled “Chicken Noodle Soup” featuring Becky G, an American Singer. The song had 9.7 million streams and 11,000 downloads in the first week. It also debuted in the World Digital Songs Chart at number 1.
