Apparently, the internet truly does not forget and this couldn’t be truer than it was for renown and talented American director James Gunn of the Guardians of Galaxy – the superhero’s fictional television series. He had made some not so funny jokes on sensitive issues like rape, pedophilia, and child abuse on Twitter between 2008 to 2012 when he was much younger and still trying to gain prominence in the industry and it came back to haunt his professional life about 10 years after.
Why Was James Gunn Fired?
The dust was raised after he consistently attacked the policies of the US President Donald Trump, which led to an onslaught on his Twitter account with the president’s supporters digging up the several inappropriate tweets which he had made in the past. These tweets bordered on sensitive issues like rape, homosexuality, as well as child abuses, where he watered down the consequences of the issues in an attempt at comic relief. With this revelation, the pressure was on Disney to relieve him of his duties as their screenplay writer and director.
The call was persistent and even though it was countered by over 350,000 written and signed petitions including the casts signed letter asking for his forgiveness and reinstatement, the company which is owned by Liberals could not compromise on their policy as they had to let go of one of their most creative writers and director who took the unknown Guardians of Galaxy vol. 1 and 2 from zero obscurity to fame, grossing chunk income and making stars out of barely known actors in the same vein.
The Chairman of Walt Disney Studios summarized it as: ‘The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values and we have severed our business relationship with him.’
Who Are the Guardian of Galaxy Casts?
The Guardian of Galaxy is a three-part based American Superhero film, an adaptation of Marvel Comics and the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be directed by James Gunn. The first volume of the work was rewritten by James Gunn, Nicole Perlman and produced by Kevin Feige.
On the 5th of May 2017, volume 2 was unveiled to the world following the massive success of volume 1 and this equally did very well at the box offices grossing a whopping profit of $663. 8 million. The volume 3 was originally bailed to be released by 2020 but with the ousting of James Gunn, what happens next remains to be seen.
The actors cast in the film are Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper as the main characters (Guardians) with other minor actors Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio del Toro.
What Did James Say?
Although the embattled director has long deleted his offensive tweets from his account, there was enough time for it to be screengrabbed and circulated in the media. Here is a peek into some of his tweets, including his response when they came into the public domain.
There was a wide claim that the conspiracy theorist and media personality Mike Cernovich was responsible for digging up his past tweets out and circulating same in July 2018, however, the film director and screenwriter has graciously accepted his faults and has tendered an unreserved apology to the people who had been hurt by his past comments on Twitter. He also thanked the crew and management of the Disney Entertainment World for the years and the opportunity to work with them before bowing out of the production.
As the saying goes no one is totally indispensable and this is especially true for a brand has grown to become a global one. James Gunn will be replaced, that is for sure and Gunn has also moved on to fresh adventures as he was welcomed by one of Disney’s rivals and competitors the Warner Brothers.
James Gunn’s first task at his new company, Warner Brothers would be to help rewrite their franchise DC comics superhero movie The Suicide Squad 2, believing that with the talented screenwriter’s input, the film will have such impact that would bring about the much needed positive reviews which eluded the first part.
