Joanna Newsom fell in love with music as a child. This was largely due to the influence of her parents; her mom was an excellent keyboardist while her dad played the guitar. She inherited their love for instruments and when she was just five, they signed her up for harp and piano lessons. Newsom continued to explore her love for music even while in school.
For high school, she attended the Waldorf School, an institution that not only emphasizes academic pursuits but also artistic ones. Newsom also attended Mills College a liberal arts college located in Oakland, California. While there, she honed her songwriting skills by studying composition and creative writing.
Joanna Newsom commenced her professional career whilst still in college. She started out as a keyboardist for The Pleased, a San Francisco-based band. However, a friend urged her to drop it for members of the public and she took the advice. It was a good move as her EPs eventually found its way into the hands of singer/songwriter Will Oldham.
