Following his drafting, he has been doing what he loves doing on the gridiron. Here, you will learn all about Ross including facts about his family.
John Ross’ Early Life
John Ross is the first of 6 kids born to John Ross Jr. and Dayna Mitchell, he is addressed in full as John Ellis Ross III and was born on 27th November, 1994 in Long Beach, California.
His involvement with American football dates as far back as 2001, at the age of 7. At one time he was playing the game in his grandma’s yard, he outran everyone to their amazement and thrill of his mom who then decided to make him develop a career in the sport. John was eventually linked up with Snoop Dogg Youth Football where his skills were further developed and sharpened.
The lad grew up in California, he had his high school education at Jordan High school where he committed to play football as a wide receiver and optional cornerback. In the school, he also ran tracks which aided his pace while playing the grid game. At a time, the kid almost quit the pigskin sport while at Jordan High. This was as a result of pressures from every corner on him to improve his game which he couldn’t do better being so young. Nevertheless, for the timely counsel and help from his grandmother and DeSean Jackson, he developed more naturally at his pace in his career.
Ross chose to play college football at the University of Washington. As a freshman at Washington, he played 13 games in 2013 recording 16 receptions for 208 yards and one touchdown with 720 kick return yards and 1 touchdown.
The following year (2014), he played 13 out of 14 games from which he recorded 7 starts playing as a receiver and 4, as a cornerback. In the season, Ross had 17 pass receptions for 371 yards and 4 touchdowns as a receiver, 12 tackles and an interception as a cornerback, and 938 return-yards and 2 touchdowns.
John Ross was largely absent from the 2015 season as a result of a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). He picked the injury during a practice session in the spring of 2015. The tenacious footballer later returned in 2016 recording 5 receptions for 90 yards with 2 receiving touchdowns and a kick return touchdown.
The star athlete saw many nominations and awards for his contributions to the game of football, some of his recognition from his college years include First-team All-Pac-12 (2016), AP Pac-12 Player of the Year (2016) and a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, the top Wide Receivers of the Country.
In a few years to come, this footballer will have come through well refined and amenable to the rigours of the game. Being that his career is still in its cradle, John Ross at this time can only be assessed by what his draft profile say about him.
The Cincinnati Bengals jersey No. 15 Wide receiver is very quick on his legs, he can outrun anybody and is equally good at tackling balls which makes him more than just good at receiving and blocking. His speed has also come in handy when he needs to lunch a pass interference against opposing teams. He can also open up games with his explosive speed by splitting safeties and drawing out the unwary ones outside of the box. With his nice footwork, John can change direction at any time without losing steam or arriving late to score a long touchdown from anywhere the pass is coming from. Rest assured, the ball is not going to drop off his hands.
While Ross has repeatedly shown his ability to run a variety of routes, track the ball in the air and make those plays that can change a game all of a sudden, there are still a couple of blunt edges he needs to work on. The footballer has had injury struggles while in college, he is also not yet strong enough to win a 50/50 jump ball just as he doesn’t have the physical strength to wriggle himself out of tight situations in the corners. These notwithstanding, with the right training and mentorship, John Ross will master his weaknesses and convert them to advantages.
He stands at a height of 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m), weighing about 188 lbs (85 kg) with a hand size of 8 3/4 in (0.22 m), and an arm length of 31 1/2 in (0.80 m).
It is worthy to note that this light-footed footballer finished the 40-yard dash in 4.22 seconds in the NFL Combine which broke the previous Chris Johnson’s 4.24 seconds record.
