Jon Gruden’s Biography

The brilliant coach was born in Sandusky Ohio on the 17th of August 1963, Jon was raised as a Roman Catholic and he schooled at Clay High School, South Bend, Indiana. Growing up, he watched his father serve as assistant to Dan Devine- the then head coach at the University of Notre Dame before he became a regional football scout, running backs coach and later director of players personnel at Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jon must have fallen in love with the sports at a very young age.

He started his college education at Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio before transferring to the University of Dayton where he graduated in 1986 with a degree in communications. During his time in Dayton, he was a three-year letterman and a backup quarterback for the Flyers team. Although he didn’t see much playtime while he was on the team, they posted a 24-7 record during his time in the university.

Fortunately for him, his potential as a coach was recognized and he was hired right out of college by the University of Tennessee as a graduate assistant coach. He then proceeded to the Southeast Missouri State as a quarterbacks coach. In his bid to get more experience and exposure, he moved to the University of the Pacific as an offensive assistant coach. In 1991, he became the wide receivers coach under Paul Hackett (head coach) at the University of Pittsburgh.

His professional coaching career began in 1992 with the Green Bay Packers when he was hired to be a wide receiver/special offensive assistant coach. He worked in this position for 3 seasons before transferring to Philadelphia Eagles where he became the offensive coordinators.

It was from this position that he was chosen to be the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 1998. He then became the head coach at Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. After several losses and under-performances, Jon was fired from his position as head coach of the Buccaneers in January 2009.

With the wealth of experience he has had in the sports, Jon wasn’t out of job for long, by May of the same 2009, he got hired by ESPN as a color analyst on their Monday Night Football program. Jon concentrated on covering the NFL Draft and the postseason college football. He also called different games on the ESPN Radio before he began the series Jon Gruden’s QB Camp where he discussed the NFL development process and the prospective Draftees at quarterback.

After his nine-years stint in broadcasting, Jon finally returned to his first love (coaching) with Oakland Raiders in 2018. It was reported that the owner of the club –Mark Davis spent 6 years trying to lure him back.

Asides the big monetary contract he secured with the club which set tongues wagging, he also had a no-trade clause included in his contract to close the loophole that saw him traded to the Buccaneers during his first time with Oakland Raiders.
